ANZAXC DAY.

SHOULD BE KEPT SACRED. > A feature of the meeting of the Hawera Returned Soldiers’ Association 'was a motion that the annual Dominion Conference be asked to request the Government to make Anzae Day a statutory holiday. Members stated that tlie; local association views with alarm the number of sports meetings and other attractions being held on Anzac Day, which it considered should be kept sacred. A motion was passed that the conference should discuss the advisability of securing a more solemn recognition of the day.

The following is an extract from the “Gazette” of the 13th inst. respecting the commemoration of “Anzae Day” (.Friday, April 23): “ I shall bo glad if the Mayors of all cities and boroughs, the chairmen of couuty councils and town boards, as well as other local bodies, as far as their districts are concerned, will similarly observe the day in remembrance of the notable deeds performed by the Australians and our brave Mow Zealand soldiers on that memorable and historic si! occasion.

“H is specially fitting that on this occasion special services .of public, worship bo held by all religious denominations and'l t hcreforo appeal to ail ministers of religion and all congregations to hold such services on behalf of the,, people of the Dominion at such hoursl during the forenoon or afternoon as are | found convenient. ■

“The New Zealand Ensign will be displayed on all public buildings from sunrise lo sunset.

“It is requested that the managers and representatives of shipping companies should direct that all ships in the various harboiirs. display their flags during the day.

“It is considered that the occasion is particularly one upon which opportunity should bo .taken to arrange patriotic meetings-during the day, and especially in the evening, to commemorate the anniversary, the question of how this may best be done being left, to the discretion of the mayors of the various boroughs and the chairmen of other local bodies.

“.J. ALLEN, “Acting Prime Minister.’
