S Mr, Mrs and Miss Sidey, of Wellingi ton, have been on a short visit to '' Manakau, staying with Mr and Mrs ! Burnell. ;' Misses Hammond and Bird, of Mana- ! kau, are away at Rotorua, on a holiday S trip, while Mrs Andrew and Miss G. •:< ltobinson left to-day for Auckland. Among soldiers due to arrive home | shortly are Lieut. N. F. Chamberlain, ; Privates Fred Dorset, Ken Taylor, and j Rich, of Otaki. j Lieut. John Murray, who was recently while on active service appointed rector of the Palmerston North High ' School, has returned to New Zealand, and will take up his duties at Palmerton North after the term holidays. The Rev. H. Cottom, of Pahiatua, who is about to leave for Morrinsville, was farcwollcd a few days ago, and : presented by Mr J. J. Boagcy, on behalf of the congregation, with a sub- . stantial ehecruc, in recognition of the • excellent services he has rendered the Pahiatua circuit. Miss Alexander paid her last visit to Otaki yesterday, as cookery expert, she intending to be married at an early date. Miss Alexnder has been visiting this district as «ookery expert for many years, off and on, during which time "she has made many friends, who will join in wishing her every happiness and . prosperity in her married life. She will take up her residence after marriage at Groytown.
The death has occurred in Auckland of Mr W. S. Bryce, one of the oldest compositors in Now Zealand. The deceased, who was a native of Scotland, arrived in Auckland with the Albertland settlers over fifty years ago, and was employed on the morning paper at the Thames in the early days of that goldiieia; In the SO's be entered the newsroom of the "New Zealand Herald." and worked there for a groat many years. The late Mr Bryce was a man" of literary tastes and very highly respected.
Miss Myra Sawyer (Wellington) has consented" to sing at the evening service at All Saints' Church, OtaM, on Sunday next, an act that will be fully appreciated. Miss Sawyer has a very. fine voice, and should be heard to great advantage in "I Know that my Bcdeemer Liveth" and "With Verdure Clad.-" Mdile. Antonio Dolores, one of the world's leading singers, considers Miss Sawyer has an excellent future in store, and says she has "a glorious voice and is highly gifted." Mdlle. Dolores is also takieg a personal interest in the young lady, and asks that Hiss Sawyer keep in touch with her. Those who have not yet heard this young Wellingtonian should not miss Sunday's service.
Mr B. P. Smith, who has been with the firm of Messrs Kirk and Baplcy solicitors, of Otaki, during the past year, has decided to commence praetice on his own account at Whakatane. a flourishing town in the Bay of Plenty, and a 200-mile run from Auckland. During Mr Smith's stay in Otaki he has become popular and proved himself a keen sport: In bowling circles partieularltf he will be much missed. We wish Mr and Mrs Smith e»ery success in their new sphere. Mr and Mrs Smith ; left yesterday for Wellington, and expect *to leave to-day for their new home. Mr Smith only returned from the north on Saturday last, after spending most enjoyable visits at varices places of interest, including 'a long overland journey by car to Whakatane. He also visited Eotorua, Auckland, and Gis borne.
