GIRLS’ CLUB,

(From Our Own Correspondent)

The first meeting for 1919 of the AViukanac Gills’ Club was held in St. Luke’s schoolroom on April 3rd, and ■over 29 old. memburs and some new members enrolled.

The president (Mrs Elder) spoke a few words of welcome to all, and briefly stated her intention of resuming her monthly talks on ‘‘Home Nursing,” which will include instructions on ‘‘How to lake a temperature and read a thermometer,” ‘‘How to make or change a bed without risk to the patient,” ‘‘How to sponge anil poidtiec, ” ‘‘The nsc and method of bandaging,’! and many other very necessary items in a sick room.” This should prove a very popular branch of the work, and in view of our very recent experiences during the epidemic, til support and encouragement should be given Mrs Elder in her labour of love.

The Secretary (Mrs Earl) read a rtatemont of the Club’s liuances which were very satisfactory, and gave - an outline of last year’s work. This was Red. Cross work, and as quite a lot was accomplished AVaikanae should be proud of its Girls Club, which almost since the beginning of the war lias done only war work. During the past, year over fifty pounds were raised (forty pounds of which sum Mrs Earl raised with a series of concerts) for Red Cross work, and after buying from Red Cross Depot all articles, such as Gur tut pyjamas, bed jackets • and shirts, materials .for bandages and swabs, and wool for knitting, quite a big balance is still in hand, but, as the Club is not doing Red Gross work this year, all surplus funds.raised for such ■ work, will be sent in to the Red Cross Authorities, so it will bcj ne«essary to raise further funds to carry on work for current, year. This years -work is to include the making.of Infant Outfits on Plunket Patterns';for soldiers! children, and as the,Club will all materials for same.-rand teach the younger members how to-cut, and sew them, two good purposes will be served, and deserve to meet, with great success. Members may also bring their own materials and will be helped with the eotting-out and making of and any plain garments. Plain sewing and fancy needlework classes will be resumed.

The subscription fur the year is only 2s (id (two and sixpence), in advance, so as every female from 7 to 70 is eligible for membership there should soon be a big increase in names on the roll. $ Later on a number of competitions will be opened for members and prizes given, but ef this, ‘more anon’. The President dispensed afternoon tea, and during the year, on the last Thursday in every month, afternoon tea will be provided by one member of the eoiumitte and two club members. NOTICE. . Mr G. Silvester, of Waikanae, and Mr E. Thompson, of Eikiorangi. are duo to arrive home from the front on loth inst. Mr Silvester left with the Main Body. - , Mr JErnesr Brown, who left with the ,15th Reinforcements, is returning on the Mahenor which is due to arrive ar Auckland about 20th inst. On Sunday afternoon (tlth inst.) the infant daughter of Mt and Mrs C, .Pfferles, while playing in a paddock near her home, was kicked in the forehead, fey a horse. She was taken by motor to Otaki, where Dr. Huthwaite attended her, and’, fortunately found that though badly bruised and temp>orari’y disfigured, xtheje is no sign of any permanent injury.
