Captain L. R. Sheppard, lately in the emplov of the Westport Harbour Board, has been appointed harbourmaster and secretary to-the Foxton Harbour Board.
Mrs G. F. Murray, of Otaki, has received word stating that her son, Driver L. Murray, is returning by the Kaikoura (draft 230), due in Wellington on or about April 17th.
Tho Rev. W. F. Grove, vicar of tho l.evin-Ohau parochial district, who has not been enjoying tho best of health for some time, lias been ordered to take a sea voyage, and leaves for England Vy the Athen e on April 10) returning to the Dominion in September next.
Mr W. H. Field. M.r. for Otaki, expects his son Geoffrey to return home very shortly. He has seen much active service, and at time of writing last was with the New Zealand Division at Cologne, though he expected to be selling out for England very shortly.
Mr George Jackson, a centenarian, has been spending a holiday in Nelson, Says the “Colonist.” Mr Jackson, who is still hale and hearty in spite ot his great u"e was born in the County of Kilkenny on July 1, ISIS, nndmime to New Zealand in 1862. MUses Jean and Annio Mathcson, daughters of Mrs Duncan Mathcson, of Palmerston North, and sisters of Mr D W. Mathcson, of Levin, who have mst returned to New Zealand, after an absence of five years, were compelled to pass through some varied experiences before reaching the Dominion. They went te England before the war ;n<l after visiting Baris, returned to Scotland three days before the outbreak of hostilities between England and Germany. They remained in Kngrrland up till 12 months ago, when they took passage for New Zealand by the Galway Castle, which brought them as tar ns South Africa. There they were compelled to remain, owing to lack ot shipping, but finally they were given accommodation on a troopship and caino on to Australia, arriving at Fort Melbourne. There they met further difficulties owing to influenza epidemic and wero not allowed to cross into Now South Wales without going into quarantine. After further delays they had finally to go into quarantine at Alliury for a week, and were then permitted to go on to Sydney and get a boat for New Zealand, arriving here on March 20 two months after leaving South Africa and 12 months after leaving England.— 1 ‘ Chronicle. ’ ’
