THE SPIRIT OF SACRIFICE.
AN INDIVIDUAL OPPORTUNITY, The war which is just over has taught, the world the sacredness of sacrifice. Every man who went to battle, every woman who sent her menfolk to fight, sacrificed something. In many thousands of instances it was the precious lives of men that were sacrificed. Yet. there are still in this country largo numbers of people who have sacrificed nothing, in connection with this titan:* conflict of armies. They have lived the same steady round of life that they, did before the war; they have lost? n* dear ones, suffered no financial losses; irdeed, many of them have profited directly by the war and indirectly by the deaths of their bravo fellow-coun-trymen. It is not suggested that there fortunate people achieved this immunity from sacrifice deliberately; it has been more in the nature of a calm progression on the old lines that has carried them seathless through times of storm. And they are as thankful as any at the happy termination of the fight between right and wrong. The time has passed for the doing of gTt-at things by halves, or in a hole-and-corner way. Onr fighters overseas have set a deathless example of that- Everything they Uii they did with all their might, and it behoves those who prospered here ia safety while their soldiers fought as* died, to carry on this noble spirit and to make sacrifice:- in order to achieve greatly. The proposed cathedral i* to be a memorial to those fine men whs perished on active service, ?.ad a ibs.skoffering to God for the safe mens of the fighting men who were net slain, is battle. It it an opportunity for individual effort and sacrifice. The people of New Zealand are prosperous, the money is here; asd what finer memorial to brave men could be built than this cathedral! And if this cathedral worthily commemorate- the deeds of New Zealand’s heroes it .surely will be that, for they have a fame aua'glory Throughout the world. "AH who desire to have £ share in this memorial cathedral should communicate with the hen. organising secretary. Rev. C. F. Askew, St. Merit’* Vicarage, Wellington.
