MANAKAU.
The Manakau public hall was well filled 011 Friday evening, when a sendoff was accorded to Mr “Dick” Storey, who has 0.-cved, during his term in the township, a most courteous and obliging tablet porter. Mr Storey has been transferred to Johnsenville. The function took the form of a social, and on behalf of the committee Mr Howard Andrew, jn a few well-chosen words, made the presentation.' He feferred chiefly to Mr Storey’s obliging and courteous nature, and said the MaSakau peoplo so appreciated his efforts that they had decided to reward him in a tangible form, and it therefore gave him much pleasure in handing to their guest a fine pair of military hair brushes. Mr Andrew concluded by wishing Mr Storey every possible saccess in his new sphere. A presentation, of a private nature, was also made, when Mr Storey was presented, on behalf of Messrs Inge and Glceson, two most appreciative residents, with a Hoe we: pipe.* These gentlemen expressed pleasure at the trouble Mr Storey had gone to late at night when stock arrived, by giving it every attention. Mr Storey suitably replied. Dancing, to splendid music supplied by Mrs Miles, was indulged in. Mr Bramiey made an efficient M.G., while Mr Andrew contributed to the harmony of the evening by contributing a song. Refreshments were also a pleasing feature. The committee responsible for the success of the affair were Moser* Nees, Childs, Bramley, Blair, and Gleeson, Mcsdames Bramley, Nee* and Daizell.
Private A. Trevethick, well known in Manakau and district, is expected to arrive here in the course of a few days. Private Keats, son .of Mr Keats, of this township, is also expected. The fruit crop in Manakau thi* season has been a splendid one, and m instances growers have found a diffienlty even in giving it away. Is. has been decided to hold the Shit* School picnic on Friday at nki. The children are looking forward .0 spending a most enjoyable time. Mr Creed, the new tablet porter, and Mrs Creed, of Wellington, have arrived. They are accompanied by Mrs Swift, mother of tho latter. An unfortunate accident happened on Saturday to Mr Bryant, son of Mr J. Bryant. He was cranking 2 car when the handle .flow back, struck hint on the wrist, and broke a,small bone. He was attended to by Dr. Huthwaite.
