OTAKI PATRIOTIC SOCIETY
COMMITTEE MEETING. A The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otaki Patriotic .Society was held at the reading-room last night. Present: Air AA'. B. Smith (chairman), Mrs Swabey, Rev. G. F. Petrie, Messrs H. Nicolson, L, fit. G'eorge, and Frank Penn. The Chairman reported that the second billiard tabic had been forwarded to Cambridge Sanatorium, as decided by the committee. A letter was received, asking the Society to support the big art union being held to provide for scholarships for soldiers’ children. —The meeting decided to take no action.
Considerable correspondence was read relative to an appeal for assistance by soldiers’ relatives residing in Otaki. Enquiries bad been made, and the result was such that the meeting decided to take no action. After a brief discussion, it was decided that the regular monthly collections on behalf of the Society’s funds be discontinued, but that, donations still be received by the treasurer and collectors. It was pointed out that, the public had lost interest, and that* the majority of regular subscribers had discontinued jtheir donations.
It was resolved that in future the committee meet quarterly, instead of every month a* in the past, but that tfle executive be- asked to Convene special meetings at any time they considered same neces-a ry. ", discussion ensued relative to welcoming returned -soldiers. It was pointed out that It wa3 Impossible to hold socials for every batch of returned men. yet the meeting thought It 2 pity that the men should not be welcomed home. After discussion, it was decided to hold ‘•'welcome home” social- at intervals, so that the public might be given an opportunity of showing their appreciation of the gallant sendee* of out soldiers,, and welcoming- them beck to their home*.
