HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.
ENGINEER'S REPORT." At .the Council's meeting oil Saturday last. Mr J. Malcolm (County Engineer) read the following report: Te Horo Riding. . ; At last the re-grading-and widening of the main road is getting to an end. I am pleased to say the last cutting is getting a coat of metal this morning. This will be good news to the motorists, as some have had a bad time. I shall put on more broken metal hi a day or two. I have repaired tho main road, and am now doing the Beach road well. It was in a very bad state. The northern end of the main road from Tc Horo to the Otaki bridge'has ! gone to pieces very badly in the last month or two. There is plenty of metal on it, and I think the best thing to do with it is to scarify, break all tinstones and roll. If any metal is. required it can be got from the crusher in the pit. The surfaceman reports that the Otaki Gorge road is now in fair order.
The surfacemen's places are all filled again, and I hope they will ail prove satisfactory. O'caki Riding. The'surfacemen--in the south end of this riding are engaged taking off some of the worst corners on the main road between Manakan and Otaki, and are doing good work. The only other work doing iu this riding is the North Manakau water supply. To it I have sent all the men that I could get to push it along, but it has proved a snag. A few chains at the upper end (the intake) were paved with boulders. Many of them had to be burst up with explosives to make room for the pipes.- The difficult part is now done, and Ptliink with reasonable luck another week, should see the 'greater part of it finished.
