BOWLING.
Three matches for the Bills trophies were played on the Otaki green on Saturday, and as it was keen considerable interest centred in the events. In two pases, however, the green was evidently too keen, and most erratic shots were sent along. Knight and O’Rourke went under badly to Larkin and Brown, there being a difference of IS in the scores j 30-12. The winners played splendidly, and scored on fourteen heads, and of the 30 points there were only four singles. Gooding and Witched were badly beaten by the consistent players , Ayre and Bills, who scored 31 to (>. The losers made a-poor showing, while the winners put up hot stuff. The latter scored on 15 heads, one realising a six—something they were proud of. ( Nicholls and R. F. Smith defeated J Bramley and Kilmister, 21-20 —a de- J feat not to be ashamed of. Neverthe-J less the score-card does not do either j side credit, as it consists of names | and total only. j Three rinks from the Lyall Bay Clab are expected to visit Otaki on Saturday next, while live rinks are expected from Foxton on February 12th.. The green is now in very good ovder, so the visitors may look forward.to keen games. I ' - ! Aiming the troubles of the bowler , '■ i s "kc absence of a satisfactory mea- j sure. What he -wants is a vest-pocket i reliable, diminutive article, which, 1 moreover, would be invaluable. Bowlers borrow measures, and forget them j in the same way as ‘those who borrow I books, umbrellas, and other unconsid- | ered things. Among the many thou- ! sands of bowlers, possibly 10,000 in New Zealand alone, there should be a small fortune in an ideal measure. On the Palmerston North green last week a bowl was noticed to have stopped suddenly in its career. Boon investigation, a hole three inches deep was found, from which a stir of the linger brought to thojsurfaee a myriad of hungry ants. "cliew '•
