LESSEES' DELEGATES.

(to the editoe.) Sir, —I was astounded oq reading the report of the evidence given by Mr W. J. Wells before the Waste Lands Committee in Wellington, when dealing with my complaint against the Trustee in the matter of fencing. Mr Wells makes it appear that I applied to the Trustee to bear half the cost of a temporary fence with the wires running from tree to tree. This is totally incorrect, and I certainly should only expect the Trustee to treat my application with derision if I made such a foolish one. Any man with a knowledge of bush fencing must know that such a method would be the height of absurdity, and I should like to see Mr Wells or any one else drawing the staples and coiling up 60 chain lengths of barb wire to take it out of the road of tire. My claim on the Trustee was for a legal fence on the proper survey line, but the Trustee, by his action, wanted me to let 260 acres of grass lie idle, whilst paying rent for tlae lnnd r until it suited his convenience to let the adjoining land to a tenant who would become responsible for the fencing. Removiug the fence as a protection against bush fire does not concern me, as whoever starts a fire, which results in damage. to a fence has to make good such damage. I think the be3t thanks of all the lessees are due to Messrs McGuire, M.H.R., and E. M. Smith, M.H.R., for the able manner in which they placed our grievances before the Committee.—l am, &c, C. McHardy. Opunake, September 26, 1895.
