THE ARCTIC EXPEDITION. St. Johns, September 24. Lieutenant Percy and his companions in the Arctic expedition have returned to Newfoundland all well. Lo::-> :i, September 24. Gruesome ac unts have been received of the straits to which Lieut. Percy and party were put. The party were so far reduced that, after eating the dogs, which are said to have been frozen standing, they were compelled to abandon their task. The proper scientific results of the expedition are fairly successful. A BIG ORDER. Tokio, September 24. The Japanese Government has voted a sum of two hundred million yen for the immediate construction of four ironclads, teu coast defenders,' thirty torpedo cruisers, and fifty-eight boats. COLONIAL PRODUCE. London, September 24. The shipment of 263 crates of New Zealand cheese, colored, were sold at 27s 6d to 345. The Times states that the offering of colonial butter at auction at standard prices has already driven the Danes outside of London, and it will become a question whether it can control the Manchester market. ATHLETIC NEWS. New.-. York, September 24. The local Athletic Club won every event from the British visiting athletics. Six English record breakers including Fry (the well-known representative of the long jump at Oxford) were absent. The following world's records were put up : —BBovds, lmin 52 2-sth sec ; 220yds &&t, 21 2-sth sec; 120yds hurdles, 15 2-sth sec. London, September 25. The young Duke of Mai borough, who succeeded to the title in 1892, is engaged to Miss Consuclo Vanderbilt, daughter of Mr William Vanderbilt, the American milllionare. Sir T. F. Buxton, the new Governor of South Australia, has sailed for Adelaide. The Southern Cress' beef is realising 2s lid. Two more of her cattle have been found suffering from pleuro pneumonia. The Foreign Office state that France has given no intimation to abrogate the New Hebrides Convention. Therefore, it would be superfluous to ask assurance on the question. Paris, September 25. The Adelaide wiue depot at the Bordeaux Exhibition has been awarded a medal. News from Madagascar states that General Duchesne surprised and routed 6000 Hovas on 15th at Tsaimoudri. Capetown, September 25. The Lorenzo Marquez mutineers at the Maritz fortress appealed to the Portuguese authorities, for pardon on condition of their returning their arms, but the request was declined. Lisbon, September 25. Three Portugese warships have been ordered to Goa to assist in suppressing the revolt amongst the soldiery there. Constantinople, September 25. The plot discovered in Macedouia for the purpose of destroying the Sultan's palace here, has lead to remarkable precautions for his safety being practised. Sydney, September 25. The license of Rev Clarke has been revoked, in consequence of the divorce proceedings.
