VICTORIAN RAILWAYS.

Melbourne September 20.

The Railway Board found that salaries and wages are in excess of those ruling outside the Department, and on British and American railways, whilst the salaries of responsible officers are lower. Pensions and compensation imposed an extraordinary burden on the revenue during 1894, and this year payments under these heads reached £BO,OOO. The Board found the service, as a whole, disorganised, if not demoralised. There were seven associations established with the avowed object of enabling their members to protect their rights and privileges. The effects of political influence were manifest throughout the system, and contributed to destroy discipline, by averting punishment for those liable to be dismissed for drunkenness and theft. The rates were not excessive, but badly adjusted.

Only 200 of the bullocks ex Southern Cross were sold. They brought prices from £ll 10s to £l7 10s. The remainder were not offered, and will be put up at Deptford tomorrow.

The best of the sheep brought 3s 3d per stone at Smithfield, and the poor and rough ones 2s 3d, 2s 4d and 2s Gd per stone, Some butchers consider these sales show that it is impossible for Australia to successfully compete in the live stock trade, while others say that the initiate a of the American trade experienced heavier losses. The ; lark Lane Express states that the mentality of the Southern Cross cattle si ows that the venture is unnatural, ind cannot pay anyhow. It adds tl at the infamous cruelty to beasts b ’ the protracted voyage ought to be suppressed.
