Messrs Nolan, Tonks and Co.’s Stock Report. At Opunake, on 17th instant, we had a good entry of cattle, but mostly young stock. Prices were slightly in advance of late rates. ‘ At Manaia, on 19th instant, there was only a medium entry, but fair prices were realised. Daring the week we have disposed privately of several lines of hoggets, ewes and lambs, and fat cattle at fair prices.
We quote : Springers, £4 7s 6d to £5 3s ; empty forward heifers, £3 10s to £3 12s 6d; cows and calves, £3 10s to £4 ; weaners, 80s to 88s; yearlings, £2 2s to £2 5s ; 2-year steers, £2 17s 6d to £3 5s ; steers, £3 7s 6d to £3 12s 6d ; fat bullocks, £6 10s to £7 ; hoggets, 7s 6d to 9s 6d; ewes and lambs, 6s 6d to 9s 6d.

Hawera, September 19
At Stratford, on Friday, the 18th instant, the yards were crowded with cattle, dairy and young stock being largely represented. Plenty of buyers were present for the classes of cattle named, and competition was keen, so that everything sold well, and very little was turned out unsold. We quote: 2£ to 3-year steers, £4 to £4 10s ; 2 to 24-year steers, £3 5s to £3 17s ; 18 to 20-month steers, £2 to £2 14s; mixed yearlings, £1 10s to £1 19s; dairy cows and heifers, £3 17s 6d to £5 5s ; store cows, £2 5s 6d to £3 7s 6d; 2-year heifers, £2 14s to £3 ss. Sheep—Ewes, Bs. Our yards were literally packed with cattle of a’l kinds at Glover Road yards on Wednesday, 18th instant. We quote: Fat bullocks, £6 to £6 16s ; 24 to 3-year steers, £4 17s to £5 10s ; 2 to 24-year steers, £3 10s to £4 10s ; 18 to 20-month steers, £2 7s 6d to £9 ss; yearlings, mixed, £1 12s to £2 ; fat cows, £4 to £6 5s ; dairy cows and heifers, £3 10s to £5 ; store cows, £2 6s 6d to £2 17s ; 2-year heifers, £2 7s 6d to £2 14s.
Mr Newton King’s Weekly Report.
At Stratford, on Tuesday, the yards were crowded, not a third of the cattle being advertised. I quote: Small calves, 11s to 17s; good do, 25s to 27s 6d ; yearlings, £1 7s to £1 16s; 18month to 2-year steers, £2 10s to £2 18s; 84-year do, £3 18s; empty heifers, £2 6s; springing do, £2 10s to £5 ; springing cows, £2 13s to £6 15s ; store cows, £1 10s to £3. On Wednesday I had a clearing sale of dairy stock for Mr A. Bayly, at Omata. The attendance was only fair, but there were some big buyers present, and every beast was sold at a satisfactory price, 160 cows and heifers in all. Cows made up to £6 17s 6d, heifers to £5 ss. At Waiwakaiho, on Thursday, the yards were full. As at Stratford a small portion were entered. We quote—Calves, 14s to 21s ; yearlings, 28s Gd to 32s 6d; 18 month steers, £2 Gs ; 2 to 2J-year do., £3 3s Gd ; 3year do., £3 10s ; 18-month heifers, £1 18s; springing do., £2 15s to £5 ss, the latter being very choice. Springing cows, £2 to £5 12s 6d ; store do, 15s to £2 15s ; fat bullocks, £G 14s. Messrs F. R. Jackson and Cos. Stock Report. No sheep came forward at Waverley, but w 7 e had a good sprinkling of cattle, and we sold the bulk. At St Hill Street, Ave disposed of all the stock that came fonvard except one pen of sheep. Both sheep and cattle sold at improved values. Pigs were in usual supply, but they did not maintain last sale’s rates. We quote — Cattle. —At Waverley—Steers, £3 5s ; fat coavs, £4 6s; heifers, £2 6s to £8 17s 6d ; milch coavs, £3 to £4; yearlings, 85s to 40s ; weaners, 24s to 275. At Wanganui; Fat cows, £4 4s 6d ; steers, £2 4s to £3lss; and up to £4 ; cows, £2 15s ; yearlings, 35s 6d to 41s. Sheep—At Wanganui; fat eAves, 10s Gd to 13s ; eAves and lambs, 10s 6d ; store wethers, 9s 2d empty old ewes, 4s 6d. Pigs—Large baconers, 38s to 42s others, 25s to 80s; porkers, 13s 6d to 16s; small pigs, 5s Gd to Bs.
) The report of the Dunedin Education Hoard's Inspector on the examhiation of Catholic schools states that at St Joseph’s School the total .presented for examination was 89, of whom 67 passed. The remarks on class subjects are : —Grammar, satisfactory ; history, fair; geography, very fair; elementary science, good, so far as the classes had gone ; object lessons, moderate. At St Patrick’s School, South Dunedin, the total number examined was 94, of whom 81 passed. The remarks on the different subjects show : —Grammar, fair; history, satisfactory ; geography, fair; object lessons, moderate'; mental arithmetic, very fair.
