PLAIN AND FANCY DDESS SOCIAL.

(Our own Correspondent.) Contrary to bis usual custom on the occasion of festive gatherings such as the above, Captain Edwin favored us with superb weather on Friday evening last. The social was for the benefit of the Hall Fund, and was a most unqualified success, visitors attending from all parts of the district. Tbe hall was tastefully decorated with nifcau and flags, which, with Chinese lanterns placed at intervals, made a very pleasant sight. There was a very good muster of fancy costumes of which the following is a lift: Mrs Simeon, "Hospital Nurse " ; Mrs Harrison, " Gypsy Maid" ; Mrs Prenter, " Japanese Lady " ; Miss Simeon, " Red, White and Blue" ; Miss A. Simeon, " Magpie " ; Miss James, " Spanish Lady " ; Miss Coffey, "Queen of Scots"; Miss M. Harrison, " Flower-girl " ; Miss B. Harrison, " Dutch Peasant Girl " ; Misses Harvey (2), " French Peasants " ; Miss L. Harrison, " School-girl " ; Miss K. Kelly, " Harvest" ; Miss Blaine, " Spring " ; Miss Morgan, " Ivy " ; Messrs E. Hensen, " Highwayman " ; F. Webbe, " Sailor " ; E. Bateman, " Sailor " ; N. Browne, " Japanese Nobleman " ; S. Sefton, " Turk " ; M. Simeon, " Spanish Nobleman " ; J. Simeon, " Smuggler " ; J. Williams and J. Bothery, " Oddfellows " ; Master C. Harrison, " Clown." Dancing commenced with the Grand March Polka, the Hospital Nurse and the Highwayman leading off.

At intervals during the evening songs and dances were contributed by the following ladies and gentlemen: Mrs V. Harrison and Mr Moss Simeon performed the duet “ Gypsy Countess ” in a very pleasant manner. Miss Simeon sang the song “ Brittania, the Pride of the Ocean ” in character, for which she had to respond to an enthusiastic recall by singing the last verse. The next items were stepdances, “ Sailor’s Hornpipe ” by Mr E. Bateman, and a “ Sword-dance ” by Mr Karere. Mr Webbe also rendered the song “ Sailing.” Miss A. Simeon sang the song “ The Magpie ” in a very lively manner, and was recalled, repeating the last verse. The last vocal item was the duet “ The Happy Policeman,” by Miss A. and Mr Moss Simeon. The last part, in which a certain osculatory act had to be performed, was watched with interest by all hands, and had to be repeated in response to an imperative encore.

The supper was provided by the ladies of the district, who were certainly deserving of great credit for their efforts on behalf of the hall. During the interval for supper Mr F. M. Chapman, Chairman of the Hall Committee, thanked the ladies, on behalf of the committee, and all who had contributed to the success of the undertaking. Dance music was supplied by Messrs Good and Putt, and the floor being also in excellent condition, dancers were able to enjoy themselves thoroughly. The accompaniments to the vocal items were played by the Misses Simeon. Mr M. Simeon carried out the duties of M.C. in a very satisfactory manner, and kept the ball rolling till about half-past four in the morning, when the proceedings came to an end with the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne.”

EIFLE CLUB. The following are the scores of the match fired on Saturday for the Egmont Cup. The weather was fine with a strong wind from the north, which had somewhat of a damaging effect on some of the scores.

Owing to the heavy rain ou Saturday evening, and also, I suppose, to the fact that many members were up all night before at the dance, the Debating- Club’s meeting had to be postponed. August oth.
