BACAELOES’ PLAIN AND FANCY
DRESS BALL.
(Our Own Correspondent.) This, our initial effort in the fancy dress dress line, was held on Friday night, and in artistic decorations and tasteful and pretty fancy dresses I think it would be difficult to excel in a much older community. The committee—Messrs Brooker, Whitmore, W. Watson and Gapper (hon secretary), had worked hard for weeks previously, and every praise is due to them for the scccessful manner is which all the arrangements were carried out. This must be shared by the ladies of the district, amongst whom the cooking was apportioned. The large quantity of-provisions, including all kinds, of delacies, must have entailed a lot of work and the result shows them to be adepts in the culinary art. Both hall and supperroom were decorated with a profusion of nikau ferns, flags, &c., aud brilliantly lighted with lamps and Chinese lanterns. The folding doors between the two rooms lately erected at the back of the hall being thrown open made a very commodious supper-room, where Mesdames Palmer, Collins and Parkes attended to the hungry guests, who, after repeated assaults on the good things provided, had to retire discomfited, there being little perceptible dimunitiou in the supply. Dancing commenced about 8 p.m, and was continued till daylight, the floor being in Excellent order. Mr T. Brooker made a most efficient M.C., aud excellent music was provided by Mrs Orchard on a Dresden Piano. The following is a list of the fancy dresses worn as far as I could ascertain them : —Ladies; Miss Brooker, “ Grace Darling ” ; Miss Naismith, “ Sailor Girl ”; Misses M. and A. Borrie, “ School-girls ” ; Miss E. Borrie, “ Maori Girl ” ; Miss T. Crab, “ Patchwork ” ; Miss Collins, “ Dancing Girl ” ; Miss J. Canning, “ Nancy Lee” ; Miss Crab, “ Rangitikei Advocate ” ;Missßulmer, Peasant Girl ” ; Miss Morris, “ SchoolGirl ” ; Miss Jessie Canning, “ Grace Darling ” ; Miss A. Morris, “ Incrociable ” ; Miss Guy, “ Fancy Spanish ” ; Miss Kappeley, “ Blue Bells ” ; Mrs G. Holmes, “ Hospital Nurse.” Gentlemen ; Messrs T. Brooker, “ Australian ” ; Barker, “ Court jester ” ; Carrol, “ Hawera Mounted Rifles ” ; JBulmer, “ Sailor Boy ” ; Wilson, Cricketer ” ; R. Canning, “ Gorite ” ; A. Canning, “ Manaia Brass Band ” ; F". Guy, “Footballer"; Huckstep, “ Californian Digger ” ; Calvert, “ Jockey.”
A meeting was held at the hall on Saturday night for the purpose of electing a Hall Committee, and receiving the report and balance-sheet for the* previous year. Mr Palmer, the chairman, read the balance-sheet, which showed the receipts for the year to be £IBO odd, whilst the expenditure amounted to £133. The recent additions were not included in this, and the debt on the hall is now £42. Messrs Palmer, Brooker, W. Watson, Stirling, Korte and Gapper were elected a committee for the ensuing year, with power to add to their number. These, with one exception, are the same as the old committee, and their re-election shows that the public are well satisfied with last year’s progress.
