LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Wellington, Tuesday. The Criminal Code Act Amendment Bill was put through its final stages. The Contagious Diseases Act Repeal Bill was thrown out on the second reading by 40 to 11. The Patea Foreshore Vesting Bill passed the final stages. HOUSE of REPRESENTATIVES. Wellington, Tuesday. Replying to questions, it was stated a vote would be asked for planting forest trees on waste lands of the Crown ; that a vote would be asked for the purpose of transforming the Mount Cook Gaol at Wellington into an asylum ; that it was proposed to make it compulsory that agricultural text books should be used in schools in rural districts. The House disagreed with the amendment made by the Council in the Criminal Code Act Amendment Bill. financial statement. Mr Ward delivered the Financial Statement in Committee of Ways and Means, occupying one hour and fifty minutes. At the conclusion, Mr Ward moved a resolution to give effect to the proposed alterations in the tariff. He said he was following the usual custom in asking the House now to agree to new duties, but discussion on the whole Financial Statement would be taken later. The resolutions with regard to the alterations in the tariff were agreed to on the voices.
