Opunake School Committee.

The ordinary meeting of the above School Committee was held on Friday, July sth. Present: Messrs Brennan (chairman), Guy, J. C. Hickey, Callander, King, D. McGregor, and O’Brien.

Minutes of previous meeting and also special me.ting were read and confirmed.

Correspondence from Board, stating that Mrs Manson had been appointed assistant teacher.

From Board, stating that £5 3s Gd had been placed to the credit of the committee.

From Headteacher, asking for a porch to be erected at residence. The Secretary stated that he thought £6 would be sufficient for the purpose, and from information received he thought the Board would grant £5 towards the work.

Resolved, That the Board be asked to erect the porch, or grant a sum to the committee to do so; also that the Board’s attention be called to the dilapidated appearance of the school, and ask them to have it painted. [Guy-Callander.]-From D. Herlihy, IhSia Road, complaining of the dirty state of the school, and that he had to cut bis girl’s hair off, and he hoped the committee would take some steps to draw the teacher’s attention to it.

Resolved, That the Headteacher be notified of the complaint, and be asked to take steps to abate the nuisance. [McGregor-Guy.] The Chairman reported that most of the members had inspected the grounds, and that certain matters of repair had .been attended to; other matters requiring attention would have to stand over for the present owing to lack of funds. The monthly return in accordance with the Education Act of those children irregular in attendance was then considered. Resolved, That notice be sent to parents of children who were irregular in attendance, notifying them that action would have to be taken under the Act to compel their attendance. [Brennan-King.] Resolved, That tenders be invited for school cleaning for the ensuing year. [Brennan-O’Brien.] Accounts amounting to £6 16s 8d were passed for payment, and the committee adjourned.
