The Opunake Times. TUESDAY, JUNE 4, 1895. NEW PLYMOUTH BONDHOLDERS.
We publish in another column certain particulars of an interview between the Hon J. G. Ward and a deputation from the Council of Foreign Bondholders, which confirms the report which reached the Colony by cable of the firm stand taken by the Treasurer in dealing with them. In answer to their request that the matter should be referred to arbitration he stated he was not prepared to discuss the matter at all, nor would his Government be bounced in any way, and that it would therefore be necessary for them to withdraw all threats before any consideration could be given. We are now informed by cable that the Government has agreed to refer the case to arbitration, and may therefore soon expect some finality to the question. Should it result in favor of the ratepayers it will prove an immense boon to this district and will very materially increase the prosperity of every settler in it.
