Reeves covering the Tetter from' the' Public Trustee (which we have already’ published). Resolved, That a copy of this letter be sent to each of the other loealr bodies concerned. - .. . V FBESH NOMINATIONS. . The clerk said that he had 'received a private memorandum from the County Clerk suggesting that’ efforts should be made if possible, to avoid a election, befeause the election for the new Waimate Road Board will be held on 6th J uly. It was agreed by members to nominate just enough candidates to fill the se.ats in the meantime. I i ■ DISTRICT ROADS. * Hawera County Council wrote intimating that it was proposed, subject to the approval of the Waimate Road Board, to declare all roads district , roads. The Chairman said that-this,was of course, the burning question,.and had practically been decided by the voice of the ratepayers at the last poll. Mr McCarthy moved that the proposal be consented to. Mr Borrie thought that it was a question whether the step should be entertained or not. It seemed to him ’ that the road board would be'making a very bad bargain in taking over the bad county roads with, of course, a very large share of the present overdraft. Mr Coxhead would support the pro- ! posal. Dual control left the cross roads bad, as each body avoided its proper : share of the work. He seconded* the proposal. . ‘ ' The Chairman said the Board would have to vote for the proposal as the people had already expressed their wishes plainly at the polls. He bei.lieved tbe county debts were very heavy, but of the amount he could not say. . 4 . Mr Sheat was averse to the proposal. It Would not be of any servide to Waimate, whose funds would have to stand the strain of its share of the large overdraft incurred by the county. Mr Watson took around a petition in - favor and would vote for the proposal. He thought that the single control of the whole of the roads would be a saving to Waimate in management expences. Proposal agreed to, Messrs Borrie and Sheat voting against it. KIRI ROAD. Resolved that unless Mr Malone proceed at once with his contract, the Board will declare his deposits forfeited. RESTRICTION OF DAY LABOR. Mr Coxhead moved that in future no day labor be done to an extent exceed£3 in any one piece of work. He said that he believed the foreman was doing his overseeing work well and was capable of looking after the contracts, but he could not satisfactorily see that day laborers do their full day’s work. The chairman said that it was only in connection with loan moneys that such was being done to any extent, and it was found convenient to employ the spreaders of gravel in other ways when spreading was impracticable owing to bad weather. He seconded. Mr Henson said that for small jobs to be done in some out-of-the-way corner is very handy to send day labor to the job. By the time a man goes to see a job worth £4 or £5, and had td go to Mnnaia with his tender, the cost would be doubled. ' He advocated private contracts in these small out-of-the-way jobs.' ' ' Mr McCarthy agreed with Mr Coxhead. The Foreman said he had, as instructed. let several contracts privately, but he would ask the board not to instruct him to let any more, as he had had nothing but trouble in connection with them. Mr Henson agreed that generally the proposal might work very well, but it would have to be subject to cases of emergency being specially treated.— Agreed to. MAKAKA TOWNSHIP. Resolved that Mr Kissick’s request for expenditure on one of tbe Makaka roads be agreed to, subject to him finding the money until the land fund arrived, KIRI ROAD. It was agreed to call for tenders for felling and stumping about 75 chains and stumping about 100 chains, notice to be given to settlers affected of board’s intention. SUTHERLAND ROAD. Tenders to be called at once for tbe approach to the beach. TENDERS. Mangawhero Road: Blinding: Simpson, 2s 6d ; Morris, 2s; Gubbin, 2s. B|d ; Sutton (accepted), Is B|d ; Carter and Sorrensen, 2s 2d, HASTINGS ROAD LOAN. Resolved that an additional £2OO be applied for-on this account in order to complete the work. _

PROP *SED WAIMATE LOAN. Messrs McCarthy and Hurley waited on the Boad, and explained that they ..bad been requested by the loan committee to iisk the Board to proceed with the loan proposals on tbe lines laid down in May last, viz., £2OOO for ■'expenditure'on district roads, in conjunction with a proposal for raising £6OOO for county roads. Mr McCarthy said that it had been arranged by the loan committee that the proposal for divi-.ious into ridings would not be pressed, but that the Committee wished the Board to proceed with the raising of the £2OOO loan, declaring the district described as the Waimate Special Rating Area. The division between this and the northern riding would run along the blodk line south of Skeet Road, and up ‘Omuturangi Road, and along the railway reserve. Mr Hurley said be had always been in favor of making both proposals stand together, and he thought that if there were any objections to tbe proposed) ' boundary on the part of the Kaupokonui district tbe matter might be held, oyer till next meeting, when the ''counter proposals could be considered at the same time as this. Possibly settlers in the bush might pro(joiundary which would be ac j ceptabie to those in both bush and open. ; , ; ) Agreed to consider the matter at next, meeting. . . . KIRI ROAD. An extension of-time was granted to the contractors conditionally. ’ OEO ROAD. rate of 4 142 th d was struck as security for the £7OO loan on the Oeo Road, between the Eltham. and Opu-nake-Stratford Road.
