RAHOTU.

(Our Own Correspondent,) The school picnic was held on Tuesday last in Mr Morrison’s place. In fee early morning the weather looked rather threatening, but it eventually cleared off, and the day turned out well. There was a good muster of both young and old, and all seemed to enjoy themselves thoroughly. For the children there were races, &c., which seemed to give them every satisfaction, while the older ones amused themselves with games of various kinds. The eatables provided fared very badly, being unable to withstand the determined attacks made upon them. Those in charge did all in their power to make the affair turn out well, and I think that their efforts were crowned with success.

Mr McGuire addressed a meeting of electors in the Rahotu Hall on Monday evening. There were about forty present. Mrs Dougherty presided. At the conclusion of Mr McGuire’s remarks several questions were asked and answered. He received a vote of thanks. A vote of thanks and confidence was proposed; but at Mr McGuire’s own request the “ confidence ” was withdrawn.

A team to represent the Rifle Club has been picked to meet a Mauaia team on Friday next at Manaia. The casus belli is the possession of the “ Egmont ” Trophy, presented by Mr F. McGuire, M.H.R., to be competed for by the two clubs. The following gentlemen are to represent Rahotu : Messrs J. Lusk, W. C. Phillips, J. McCollum, E. Sutton, W. Mills, E. E. Morgan, and J. Coliner. Some comment has been caused by the action of the new members of the Harbor Board in voting themselves travelling expenses and ten shillings a day at their very first meeting. I fancy this would be a bit of a surprise to a good many people, after the way the then embryo members and their supporters are raving at what they considered the unnecessary expenditures incurred by the late members of the Board. If they were elected economical management was to be the first consideration, and behold the new economy ! February 27th.
