TELEPHONE FOR AWATUNA.
We would call the attention of the authorities to the urgent need for telephone communication between Awatuna and Opunake. Awatuna is rapidly rising in importance and population, being the central point of a very thickly settled district, and the need of telegraphic communication is very much felt. The cost of erectting a line would not amount to more than a couple of huudred pounds, and we are convinced that if it were erected it would be found to pay the Government handsomely. Places of very much less importance and population have already had the privilege extended to them, and the Government find that the stations pay. In cases of accident or serious illness, it would prove a great convenience to have such a ready means of calling in medical aid. The business requirements of such a large population as exists there at present have also a reasonable claim upon the attention of the Government. All the settlers should sign a requisition to the Government and place it in the hands of Mr McGuire, M.H.R., who, we have no doubt, will leave no stone unturned to press the matter on their attention. If the people take the matter up earnestly, we fepl satisfied success will attend their efforts.
