Mr Newton King’s Weekly Report

New Plymouth, November 80.

Cattle—At Stratford, _ on Tuesday, in spite of the heavy rain in the early morning, there was a very large muster of cattle. Bidding from the start was fairly brisk, and bad it not been for the cold rain which set in about four o’clock the sale would have been a remarkably good one. As it was, nearly everything was sold, only one or two pens going home. Prices on the whole showed a decline of two or three shillings on the previous sale. I quote : —calves, 17s 6d to 37s ; yearlings, £1 19s to £2 8s; 15 to 18month mixed, £2 10s to £2 18s; 18month heifers, £2 13s to £3; 2-year do, £3 5s to £3 8s ; 18-month steers, £2 14s 6d to £3 ; 2 to 24-year do, £8 8s to £3 IBs. A fine pen of 2|-year fresh condition steers from Mr D. Sinclair, of Norfolk Eoad, made £4 10s, and a grand line of 34-year bullocks from Messrs Broughton Bros, of the same locality, made £5 Is 6d; springing heifers, £3 12s 6d to £5 ; springing cows, £3 15s to £6 10s ; store do, £2 15 to £3 2s 6d; fresh do, £3 4s 6d to £3 11s ; cows and calves, £3 10s to £4.

At Waiwakaiho, on Wednesday, the yards were crowded, every available yard, including sheep pens, being brought into requisition. The sale was a somewhat peculiar one, for, while prices for 12 to 15-month heifers were fully sustained, there was a heavy fall of 7s to 8s in all steer lines a large proportion being passed in though several pens were placed privately at reduced reserves. Springing heifers on the whole were a bit lower, though a few of good quality made full values. Calves made 17* 6d to 80s ; yearlings, 37s to 47s ; 18mouth steers, £2 12s 6d ; good 2-year do, £2 19s to £3 5s ; 2| to 3-year do, £3 5s to £4 ; yearlings, heifers, £2 ss; 18 to 20-month do, £2 18s to £3 ; springing do, £4 to £5 2s; fat Is ; springing cows, £3 10s to £6 2s 6d ; store do, £1 10s to £3 ; fresh do, £3 Os ; fat do, £4 to £4lss; cows and calves, £4.
