MontaguE-Fredo Company.
Despite the very boisterous weather on Tuesday evening a good bouse greeted the above company on their first appearance at Hawera. The entertainment given by the company is a most varied one, and is both amusing and clever; and the company is certainly one of the best of its kind that has yet visited Hawera. From first to last loud applause followed each act, and the audience were unanimous in praise of the entertainment. • Madame Fredo performed some wonderful feats on the trapeze —feats that are not seen in any circus, and she established herself as a most daring gymnaste. She hung head downwards from the trapeze, and held a second trapeze in her teeth whilst a youthful member of the company went through sorde feats on it. She hung thus for three or four minutes, during which the strain must have been most severe. She also hung head downwards, and supported with her teeth Miss May, another skilled gymnast. The feats were most daring, and was greeted with great applause at their termination. Her single trapeze act was also most skilful, and she showed wonderful agility and strength. Two most precocious children are Bubbles and Lar, two little mites, who go through acrobatic feats of a most difficult character and seem to be entirely devoid of bones. They also sing and dauce, and they were loudly applauded for their singing of the “ Rowdy, Dowdy Boys ” and “ Daisy Bell,” m which they introduced the skirt dance. An amusing item was the song “ The Houligans ’ ’ by Bubbles which provoked roars of laughter. Professor Montague gave some capital feats of legerdemain, both puzzling and interesting, and he proved himself a conjuror of decided ability. He also gave a ventriloquial exhibition, with his three figures, which was very* clever and amusing. The professor is a skilled entertainer, and his efforts were loudly applauded. Several songs were sung by_ Miss Mynton, who possesses a cultivated soprano voice of great range and quality, and she was repeatedly encored. Mr Salisbury also saug a patriotic ballad in very pleasing style, and was encored. They are both excellent vocalics, and sing with great taste. Mons. Fredo and little Bubbles and Lar amused the audience greatly, the former also accompanying several of Bubbles’ songs on the •mandolin. The entertainment concluded with a very amusing farce, which provoked roars of laughter, and sent the audience away in excellent humor.—Star.
