The New Bishop of Wellington.
(Special Correspondent N.Z. Times.) London, October 14.
Mr Wallis was born at Hastings in November, 1835, his father, the Rev. Joseph Wallis, M.A.*, then being curate in charge of St. Clements, in that town. He was educated at St. Paul’s School, where he stayed from 1864 to 1872. He was captain of the school and head exhibitioner in 1871-iJ, and is now one of its governors, having been nominated by the University of Cambridge four years ago. In October, 1872, young Wallis went up to Cains College, Cambridge, and the following year he obtained a scholarship in classics. His university distinctions you already know. Of late years Mr Wallis’ main work has been as dean of his college. This has brought him into connection and afforded him intimate knowledge of many generations of undergraduates, with whom he has always been extremely popular. In 1891 he filled the office of Lady Margret Professor of Divinity in place of Dr Hort, who was ill, and delivered the terms lectures in his place, receiving much kudos for the work. Mr Wallis has a’so on several occasions been appointed to preach before the ’Varsity, and on five occasions examined for the Theological Tripos. Last July the rev. gentleman was offered and declined the Provostship of Trinity College, Toronto. Mr Wallis intends to sail for New Zealand by the Ormuz on November 16th.
