The Confidence Trick.
Melbourne, October 22. An Adelaide telegram states that an effective confidence trick has come under the notice of the police. An elderly farmer of Moss Yasb, New South Wales, went to Sydney and drew £199 out of a bank for the purpose of proceeding to England, He met two Sydney cardsharpers, with whom he gambled, and one of them snatched all thd»old man’s money off the table and bolted. The other man»pretended to be very much greived at his com-, panion’s conduct, but advised the farmer to say nothing of the matter, or he would be imprisoned for ten years for signing a cheque in a false name, which he (the farmer) bad been persuaded to do by the confidence trick man before he levanted, §s.a guarantee that he would pay all his losses in the game. The second sharper then easily gotridof his frightened victim by giving him a steerage ticket to Adelaide and •£B. The farmer, stranded here with only 13s in his pockets, consulted the police, who telegraphed to the Sydney authorities. A relative of the farmer’s has since forwarded him money and he is now on his was back to Sydney.
