HARBOUR ENDOWMENT.

(to the editor.) Sir,—l was pleased to see in your valuable paper of the 3rd August a letter signed by A. H. Moore suggesting that the Government be asked to set aside a certain amount of land as an endowment for harbour purposes in your district. The idea is a good one, and I think it would be advisable

to hold a meeting, and by nmns of‘resolutions bring the matter before the Government and our member, Mr McGuire. There is no time to be l_ost, as the Estimates will be before Parliament in a few days. The present Government are liberal, and where the voice of the people is in unison, I feel sure that Opuunke will not appeal for assistance in vain. There is nothing to prevent the larger boats of the U.S. S. Company from calling at Opunake, and I feel sure there will be suflicient inducement offered should the jetty be replaced and put into deeper water. Before closing, I would like to suggest for your consideration that, as Opunake possesses a large and’ commodious public . hall, it would be a very valuable help to the young folk if a library was started in connection with the ball. A small annual subscription from those supporting it would be necessary. It would be the means of preventing youths from aimlessly walking the streets at night, and be a great help in cultivating their minds.-—I am, &c., ’ UNIS. Opunake, 10th August, 1894.
