Anniversary of Fire. The disastrous fire which totally destroyed the Opotiki Hospital occurred a year ago on Thursday next, December 4th. Shipping. - The m.v. Otimai which has been bar-bound for the past three days, sailed for Auckland at 9.90 this morning with a full cargo of butter and wool. She is expected back again at the week-end. School Notice. The attention of parents and pupils is di-awfi to an advertisement in to-day’s issue concerning school matters and the collection of property. School books and other property may be collected any day this week. Cordial Bottle Shortage. Attention is drawn to a special announcement in to-day’s issue by the Opotiki Cordial Factory concerning the bottle shortage. The usual Christinas orders cannot be supplied and hotels, shops, clubs, etc. can only be supplied on a bottle for bottle basis. Corso Street Stall. The Corso Committee has resolved to go on with the Street Stail on Friday, wet or fine. If the conditions are unfavourable the stall will be moved from the positron near the Post Office to some m ire hospitable spot. A few more collectors to take boxes on the street for an hour are needed and any willing to help are asked to ring Messrs. East or Steele,. Pukeko Drive.

At the request of a number of farmers whose properties adjoin the Waioeka River, and by consent of the Minister of Internal Affairs, the members of the Opotiki Rod and Gun Club held a pukeko drive at the week-end. Over 40 birds were shot, but several have been seen since strutting about, so the species is not likely to become extinct locally,

New Car Service Time-table. At the meeting .of the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce on Thursday night, Mr. J. R. Dunlop, manager of N.Z.R. Road Services, Opotiki, gave details of a new Rotorua-Taihapc-Palmei'ston North timetable leaving Rotorua at 10.30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and arriving in. Wellington at 10.25 p.in. The return trip to Rotorua was timed to arrive in Rotorua at 8.30. The return fare from Opotiki was £6 14s.

Suspension of Hospital Bus. At the monthly meeting of the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce, Mr. J. ~R. Dunlop, manager of the Opotiki office of N.Z.R. Road Services, stated that he had been asked to conserve petrol in every possible way. He did not think that he could interior with any of the existing services except the Hospital bus service, returns of which showed that recently only one or two passengers were carried on each trip. T t was net proposed to suspend the Waiocka service as that brought business to the town. In reply to a question by Mr. East Mr. Dunlop affirmed that the idea of the suspension was to resume again when it became possible. Mr. Stott said that the service had been seriously affected by the fire. Mr. East expressed appreciation of the fact that the Railway Department gave consideration to bringing business to the town.

Air Service to Opotiki. In accordance with a decision made at a meeting of the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce, letters were recently written to the National Airways Corporation, Wellington, and to the Rotorua Chamber, in connection with a suggestion that an air service with smaller ’planes should include Opotiki in a feeder service to connect with the main routes. The Rotorua Chamber of Commerce replied that they had written to National Airways in connection with the matter. A reply from National Airways was also received at' the meeting of the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce on Tlrrusday night. The letter stated that Opotiki was included in the plan for a service but it could not be undertaken until ’planes became available. The service would be instituted as soon as possible. It was suggested by the president, Mr. E, C. East, that a letter be written to the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce seeking support for a feeder service, and a motion to that effect was seconded by Mr. E. W, Oswald and carried.
