WEEK-END BURGLARIES GOODS AND MONEY TAKEN Thieves were again active in Opotiki during the week-end. The premises of the Farmers’ Trading Co. were entered by intruders \yho got into the building ,by using a skylight and getting down inside the building by the use of a rope. An unsuccessful attempt was made to blow open the strongroom and the result was that the door became jammed and the staff was unable to get at the firm’s books on Monday morning. A small amount of petty cash was taken from the office. A number of valuable watches and a rifle were taken before the intruders left by unbarring two doors* On Saturday night Marc’s Four Square store was entered and 990 cigarettes and about £6 in money takfen. Entrance was gained through the back door. An unsuccessful attempt was also made to break into the pavillion cf the Opotiki Bowling Club but the two men were disturbed and made Off.

Arising out of the thefts from Marc’s store a young Maori, Tai Coleman was arrested and charged on Monday morning in the Opotiki Police Court. ' He was 'remanded until to-morrow morning.

As Coleman had previously given no trouble he was allowed to work around the Police Station but disappeared last night.
