INTERESTING GAME Teams captained by Stevenson and Beattie had a very enjoyable game on Saturday and the result was very close k Stevenson’s team winning by 21 runs on the first innings. Stevenson won the toss and elected to bat, sending Stern and Wells in to open .the innings but trouble came early when Stern was bowled by Warren with only one run on the board. Wells aiid Badeley then took charge and after two lucky escapes early in his innings Badeley settled down to do the scoring while Wells held his end tip and got in some very useful practice. He stayed until the total was 7-1 when he was nicely caught in the slips by Beattie off Warren. Stevenson was bowled next ball and it was left to Hilton to stop Warren’s chance of the hat trick which he did successfully. The rot then set in and from 2 for 74 the side was all out for 92. H. Parkinson 3 for 15 and Warren 3 for 11 did most of the damage and both bowled very well. Badeley was 82 not out, out of a total of 92. Beattie’s team was soon in trouble "also, as Warren was brilliantly caught in the slips by Holman off Hilton’s first ball this season as he has been unable to play before. Rob was bowled by Hilton for 3 and Black was caught behind the wicket for 0 and Beattie , played a ball on to his wickets, for 1; all four wickets falling to the bowling of Hilton. At lunch time the score was 17 for four wickets. After the resumption Holman and Parkinson livened up proceedings and scored very fast to bring the 60 on-the board before Parkinson was run out for a very useful 11 runs. The last man Bright was also run out for .5 just when it looked as if he and Holman would pull the game out. of the fire. Holman was eventually not out for 41 scored in good style.
Hilton 4 for 8 was the most successful bowler ; and J. Moore also bowled well. Batting a second time Stevenson’s team made 73. thief scorers were. Wells 31 not out, Badeley 19 not out and Stevenson 15. Wells is showing good promise and should develop into a good player. When he stands up to his wieket he is very hard to shift.
Beattie’s (cam had lost 5 wick els for 34 when time was up thus ending a very interesting day’s cricket. Warren 12, Black 10 not out and ltubb 10 not out scored the runs.
Next Saturday a game has been arranged between a Maori eleven and a Pakeha s:de. The Maori team is as follows: J. Moore, Warren, Parkinson, Bright, Robb Baker, Maraeroa, Grace, Tc Pou, 11. Mokcmoko, Tc Whiti, Smith, G. Moore, C. Edwardson.
