WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WOODLANDS The November meeting of the Woodlands Women’s Institute was held recently in the Woodlands Hall. A good attendance of members was presided over by Mrs. C. J. Hollard. The meeting opened with the reading of the Creed by j£- Mrs. Noble. Cjt The main feature of the day was - ’ the “Flower Show” and the wonderful display of blooms was much' admired. 1 The points prizes for the year resulted Mr;?. Piikington 1, Mrs. C. J. Holla rd 2. Mrs. Price and Mrs. Mulhern senr. tied for 3rd. place. .• The Hilda Hollard Memorial Trophy donated by Mrs. C. J. Hollard (to be competed for annually and if won for three years in succession by one member to become the property of the holder) was won this year by Mrs. Piikington. A special prize was gvien for the member who had joined during the year gaining the most, points. The winner was Mrs. Vin Mulhern. During the business discussion it was decided to send a delegate to Wellington next year for. the Dominion Conference. The programme opcried"with the Roll Call, “Hints for .keeping cut flowers fresh” was well answered. The competitions for the afternoon resulted as follows : Red, white and blue bunch in Clinch vase for effect: Mrs. McGregor 1.

The Golden Thread entitled “Down the Garden Path” was given by Mrs. Mohr and proved very interesting. A competition arranged by Mrs. Mohr was won by Mrs. Price. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. S. Abbot and Mrs. Baird for judging the flowers at the show. Luncheon and afternoon tea was dispensed by all members. The singing of the National Anthem. brought a very successful meeting to a close.

OTARA GARDEN CIRCLE A very enjoyable afternoon was spent at the residence of Miss X. Ncilson when members of the Otara Women’s Institute Garden Circle met for their November meeting. There was a good attendance and one new member war; welcomed by the chairwoman. The business was dealt with, followed by a very interesting reading .on dahlias which was given by Mi’s. Appleton. A very amusing competition entitled “Jumbled Flower Names” was arranged by Mrs. W. Young and won by Mrs. McCallion.’ Afternoon tea was served by the hostess after which the exchange of plants took place. Members appreciated the fine weather to view the well-kept gardens, the many different kinds of shrubs being of great interest.

The best bloom competition was judged by Miss Neilson, the result being as follows. — Mrs. S. Parkinson (gladioli) and Mrs. Henry (amyrillis) tic Ist., Mrs. W. Young (rose) and Mrs. S. Abbot (water lily) tie 2nd., Mrs. P. Brown (pentstemon) 3rd.
