S.A. ASSISTANCE OFFERED Before leaving Opotiki on Wednesday' morning Commissioner Astbury, S.A., received an urgent telefram from Wellington to ring headquarters. Co-operation of the local post office enabled the Commissioner to speak to Wellington in three minutes and the result was as follows
To Mr, Ballantyne and to the Mayor of Christchurch, telegrams of condolence to be passed on to the bereaved. To the Divisional Commander, Major Riseley instructions to be of any assistance he can. To Adjutant Baker, Officer in Charge of Christchurch City Corps, commendation for a noble job standing by to assist and doing what he .could.
Numbered among the many missing as. a. result of the tragedy is Sister Iris Elwood a noted Christchurch singer.
