MATAWAI FAREWELLS
MR. & MRS. V, V. SMITH The popular esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. (J. V. Smith arc held in the district has been further demonstrated by recent farewell presentations made in view of their departure to take up residence in Opotiki, states the Gisborne Herald. Pupils of the Sunday School and members of the Matawai P.W.M.U. presented tokens to Mrs. Smith following the presentation by her of the prizes to her pupils at the annual ceremony. Mrs. Gibson expressed appreciation of the great work of Mrs. Smith among the children and as president of the P.W.M.U. presented . Mrs. Smith with a box of handkerchiefs embroidered with her initials. In expressing her thanks for the thoughtful gift Mrs. Smith hoped she would still be able to visit and be visited by her many friends in the Matawai district.
The St. Mary’s Ladies’ guild presented a. purse to Mrs. Smith. On Friday evening Mr. and Mrs. Smith were guests of honour at a card evening and Mr. Smith was presented with a gift of books and Mrs. Smith with a cheque on behalf of residents of the district by Mr. W. L. Rutledge, who expressed suitable appreciation of the services they had. rendered in public affairs and. wishes .for their future happiness. On behalf of subscribers to the Matawai Library, Mr. A. E, Gibson made the presentation to Mrs. Smith of a gift of books and thanked her for her loyal work as honorary librarian over a period of 20 years. He recalled that Mrs. Smith had been, in Wellington when the Country Library scheme was first mooted, and was the means of having this service brought to the hilF country. ' -
