COUNTY WORKS

Mr. W. W. Upton, county engineer, reported as follows at the monthly meeting of the Opotiki County Council: — Clocked Road In company with the riding members an inspection of this load was made. It was recommended that the existing damaged culvert in the bend below the dip be renewed with 12 inch pipes, and that a new 12 inch pipe culvert bo put in near Lambert’s, and one at the junction of McCarthy’s and Crooked roads. Decayed Bridge lu company with the chairman and riding members, an inspection was made of the bridge giving access to E. Maxweil. To renew, this bridge, using part of the present decking, would cost between £BO and £IOO. Metal WainuUßoad I have looked into the matter of persons obtaining metal from the above roadside. I consider that council could give permission, but it would have to be careful to safeguard the public. Permission could be granted upon application to say, the engineer, to obtain stone at certain places and in an approved manner, and for certain periods only, and not as a general right. Scenic Reserve

I have inspected tile scenic reserve on the river bank, Upper Waiotahi river. The scenic reserve as far as I can make eat, is to the north of the track leading from the road to the river, and that land further south between'the road and river is just ordinary liver reserve. Works Carried Out Slips have been removed from the Pakihi road and general repairs done to the road. The bridge on the Waiotahi road known as Smalls bridge has been repaired. New hardwood stringers have been put it, and some new decking laid. This bridge will now carry all ordinary traffic. The first point from the Matakeripu bridge on the Wainui road has been widened with a bulldozer. The damaged culvert on the Crooked road previously referred to, has been renewed with 12 inch concrete pipes. Of this culvert, only 8 feet of pipe were not broken. On the Takaputahi road men arc engaged clearing slips and on general repairs.

Gravelling repairs have been done on the Otara, Upper Otara, Wainui, Waiawa, Waiotahi, Apanui, Matchett'S, Keens and Stevens roads. The drain, Upper Otara road near Black’s has been cleaned out. Tractor The Allis Chalmer tractor has been laid up for a month for repairs, but I hope to have it and the planer at work again shortly. Bridge Takaputahi Road The small bridge. 29 feet in length at the far end of the Takaputahi road is in bad order and is not safe for heavy traffic. This bridge is situated between Hermanson’s house, and woolshcd. To rebuild would be very expensive. The watershed at this place is very small, and I consider a 30 inch diameter, pipe culvert with a fairly deep filling would be the most suitable. The cost of this be about £7O. ■. v
