MOVIE NEWS

LIGHTS SPELL "DEBORAH KERR” Deborah Kerr has been a star for more than three years notv, but it is only recently she has actually felt like one! A girl who* found fame in tho “blacked out” war years, the beautiful red-haired English actress soared to the top ranks of her profession without her name in light . . ..a mink coat . . . lovely gowns, or indeed, any of the recognised earmarks of success. Not that Deborah ininded. She happened to love acting for itself, and was prepared to wait for the rest. ; To-day, the girl who enchanted you with her performances in such films as “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp” and “Perfect Strangers” is one of the most glittering names in Hollywood. Bought New Home Since they arrived in the United States last November, Deborah and her husband, Anthony Bartley, have GLAMOUR

bought a charming house in Pacific Palisades. It hasn’t a swimming pool—but. it is near the ocean, which pleases the Bartley’s very much. They are both keen swimmers. As to the gowns—well, Deborah says, ruefully, she has been too busy to concentrate much on this department,• for she’s been experimenting with such good . old Hollywood customs as tasting her first .hot dog—attending her first big premiere—having her hair done at famous Max Factor's—and, of course, seeing as much as possible of the countryside. All this—sandwiched between weeks of intensive work before the cameras.'?

It was a great thrill, Deborah admits, seeing her name in lights—big fat electric ones. They have spelt out her name in large letters near those of her co-star, Clark Cable, wherever her first M-G-M film, “The Hucksters,” has been shown.

Making a test for her first film, Deborah was naturally nervous. She admitted this ,-to Gable, who confessed he was so nervous himself he had donned the wrong suit of clothes.for the test! Whereupon the English girl immediately felt better, and turned out a test which was adjudged one of the most outstanding ever made at the studio.

The friendliness of Holl) wood has made a deep impression on the young actress. “People in the theatrical business,” she says, “are proverbially friendly, of course—but in Hollywood it seems to me that everyone everywhere goes out of his way to make you feel at home.”

>-U | And Hollywood’s opinion of De- X borahl It rates her one of the most naturallytrdjeautjful . . . the most charming . the most . . . As'you may gather, Hollywood approves of Miss Kerr. Quite apart from her looks and ability, it likes her sincerity, her intelligence, and her utter lack of what is known on both sides of the Atlantic as “side.”

“The Hucksters” has Miss Kerr playing a British girl who has been trusplantcd to New. York City. In her second American film, she’ll be seen as a British girl again—although in a provincial English town. This time,, she’ll share her romantic scenes? with Walter Pidgeon. The film! “If Winter Comes,” from the famous story by A. S. M, Hutchinson. And even though the film is completed, AVinter is still the season Deborah Kerr is dreaming about. Because in December next, she and her husband will be welcoming the small sor or daughter, whose arrival promises to make their happines complete. ,
