HEDLEY TOP SCORES COUNTRY JUST FAIL Due mainly to a fine opening innings of 52 by Hediey and a late knock of 30 not out by Bright, Country just failed by 39 runs to overtake the Town’s score of 190. Hediey and Beattie carried their over week’s score to 20 before Beattie played over an overpitched ball and was bowled by Woodward. The second wicket fell at 28 and then Hediey and Wells, a promising High School lad settled down to a useful partnership which took the score to 48 when Wells was bowled for a nicely played 9. Rowe was next and started off with two boundaries but then put his leg in front of a straight- one and was out l.b.w. A liewcover in A. Clement was next and soon settled down only to lose Hediey at 79.
Hedlcy’s 52 was a very good el fort showing a good defence an scoring heavily off any leg balls.
At lunch time Clement was still batting nicely and the score was 91 for five wickets. After the interval Clement and Burton moved the score along to 105 when Burton lost lii.s wicket. Bright coming as number 10 put fresh hope in the Country players as he set about the bowlers in no uncertain manner treating all bowlers alike. This could hardly be called an orthodox innings as most cf his runs came from boundaries scored with a vicious cross bat. Although not copybook cricket it was most effective and nearly pulled the game out of the fire. The innings came to a close when Iloliman took his third catch behind the wicket.
With about one and a half hours left to play Town started their second innings and five minutes before time were all out for 7U. The only two batsmen to get double figures were Stern 23' and Warren 21.
The oustancling performances for Country were'Wells 3 wickets for 6 runs, Sargent 3 for 7 and Mason 3 for. 7 and P. Jcrram, took three nice catches. It was pleasing, to sec the younger members doing so well with both bat and ball.
Next Saturday the local representative side travels to Whakatane to play Whakatane United. The following team has been selected :
Jtobb, Warren, Black, Hedley, Stevenson, Stern, Beattie, D. Hoffman, Stewart, Mason, Badeley, Burton (12th. man). The bus loaves the Itoad Services Office at 8.40 a.m. sharp.
