WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
COUNCIL MEETING The bi-annual council meeting of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Federation of Women’s Institutes was held recently at Waiotahi. Representatives were present from almost all of the Institutes and were given a hearty welcome to the Waiotahi Instituc by Mrs. Wagner, who was deputising for Mrs. .Scott (president).
Mrs. Armstrong' the president of :he Federation then took the chair, the meeting opening with a hymn.
The minutes of the annual meeting were read and confirmed. As the results of the remits passed there was correspondence from the Traffic Department, also a letter from the Health Department. Reference v.as made to the possibility of a group travel scheme to operate about April of 1948. Institutes were asked to send in the numbers of members willing to support the plan, trips to Russell or the South Island were suggested.
The bi-annual report was then read, details of the coming drama festival and Eisteddfod were given with dates of play performances. The Institute show is to take place next March at the show grounds in Whakatane. It is hoped to have tutors in both dressmaking and art's and crafts next year. In moving the adoption of the report the president stressed that the federation should not be split but that Institutes shoidd work together to carry out the year’s programme which is arranged with that object. The financial statement was read by the treasurer. Expenditure was chiefly executive travelling expenses. Cash in hand amounted to £44 11s 2d of which £2O is held in trust
up to three years for Te Kaha. Institutes’ reports were read, all of which were full of interest and proved that enthusiasm and growth were taking place in all districts. The luncheon adjournment was then taken. On resuming remits were" then considered and interesting discussions on the various subjects took place. Mrs. Armstrong announced that Mrs. CaverliiU was the successful candidate for election to the Dominion Council. She was presented with a ‘good service badge.” Mrs. Caverhill then gave her report on the meeting of the •Dominion Council meeting held on August sth, which was opened by Lady Freybcrg. It was decided to build new headquarters and each Institute was asked to raise at least £l per year for the next five years for that pur
Following Mrs. Caverliill’s report and a most amusing item given by Otakiri (here was a talk given by Mrs. Hauitain- of the W.D-. ILF. about the part women can take in local body work. ■ The competitions resulted in Whakatane being placed first; and Waiotahi second. A short time was spent- in gt n eral discussion and questions. The meeting fully approved of a. suggestion that in cakes for council meetings be purchased by the hostess institute. The meeting concluded with afternoon tea. The Waiotahi Institute is to be congratulated on the efficient manner in which the lunch and afternoon tea for so many was managed. The day was full of interest and enjoyment for all those attending.
