DUKE STREET DRAIN
COUNCILS TO CO-OPERATE Duke, Street drain at the southwestern • eptner of the borough has for many '’years been a source of considerable trouble and argument of the matter of keeping the drain cleaned. Recently the Opotiki Borough Council approached the County' Council with the suggestion that the two councils should take an equal share in straightening and cleaning the bottom end of the-drain and Mr. Wilson should also be askivd to co-operate with the two councils.
The following letter was received from the county council at- Tuesday night’s meeting of the borough council:—
Your letter of the 2nd. September 1917 has been considered by my council, a.jid an inspection made of the proposed deviation.
1 am pleased to inform^yuuj:{.hat my council agree to your council's suggestion that the drain should be straightened where it passes through" Mr. Wilson's property, and are prepared to help .with the work on the understanding that-sßy" expenditure iff will ' _be-\,met by both councils* on an equal" basis. *.wis£ to .point out, -.however* that by undertaking this work it ..will be obligatory; to carry: out all future cleaning and maintenance of this part of the drain, and before commencing the work wish to seek an agreement with your council that the future cost of such cleaning and maintenance of this paid of the drain will be borne by both councils on an equal basis. There was little discussion following the .reading ,of.. the letter, a motion"'agreeing to the county council’s .proposals being carded unanimously.
