VIM. I MIAN A W.L GARDENING ' : CIRCLE (News Correspondent.) A most interesting and pleasant afternoon was spent at the residence, of .Mrs. A. Engle by the members of tho W.l. 'Gardening Circle, last Wednesday. - ■' - Mrs. John Addison presided over a good attendance. Apologies:, were received from the secretary ~(Mtss Stansbury and .Mrs. H. Wardhnv, Mrs. Stevenson read the minutes 'of the previous meeting. A letter was read from the Waimaiia Tennis' Club, asking the gardening circle members to replant the scarlet oak tree, planted in commemoration of the Coronal ion", if pcvsible, as the club intended to put down another tenuis court and tho tree would be in the way. Mrs. X. Clark gave a m,ost interesting talk oir .the “Floral Clock’’ at ,Wfdt on Wo<nlb, Liverpool, England. The speaker told how the whole face* and the hands of the clock were covered!.- in (lovers, niijl the clock kept perfect time, although most of thu mechanical part of the clock was beneath: the surface of- the- ground. Mrs. Clark showed snapshots of the clock and flowers, the colourings being most beautiful. The speaker stated that it was a marvellous sight, and wellworth seeing. A competition, arranged by Mrs. King, .guessing the names of native tree and shrub leaves, was won l»y Mrs. Wcolfield. A special competition for sweet peas was won by Mrs. King. The president donated a trophy, which she presented to Mrs. King. -• Alter a dainty tea had been .served by the hostesses, Mrs. K. Hell and Mrs. C. WvJdc, the members walked around the garden, which was bright with flowers; the lawns and vegetable garden being particularly neat and trim. The competitions for the afternoon were:— Rest Flower: Mrs. Hughes (stock) lj Mrs. lv. Rell (oriental poppy) 2, Mrs. King 3. Bow] of Roses arranged for Effect : Mrs. King ], Mrs. C\ Wylde 2, Mrs. Hughes 3., . ’ Rest Vegetable: Mrs. Eagle (cauliflower) 1, Mrs. King 2, Mrs. Hughes 3, Sweet Peas: Mrs. King 1. Members exchanged flower seedlings and gave hints on planting various ones. The December meeting will be held at- the home of'Mrs. Mannum on the second Wednesday. • The afternoon dosed!with a hearty vote of thanks to' Mrs. N. Clark for anting as judge and for her talk. Mrs. Eagle was also thanked for tho pleasant a iter noon spent 7by members.
