YESTERDAY’S RACES SEVERAL CASUALTIES Point rjjk-c-s for both the ‘‘ldle* Along” class boats and the 14-11. and i.vi t class, commenced yesterday in a strong, north-westerly breeze. There were several mishaps. Amusement was caused amongst spectators when a member of' the crew of “Alaric” started t ( , climb the mast in pursuit* of a halyard and caused the beat to capsize before the races commenced. The “Idle Along” class race started first, and) all of tins boots crossed the. finishing line, although “Alanone” came home with a broken rodder. The race resulted: — Silver "Wings scr. 11.50} 1 >* Alanene 2 min. 11.58 2 Flying Cloud 2 min. 1.1.56} -3 Tin- lift, class was started 15 minutes after the first race boats had got . away. All the boats crossed, the starting line in a biinch except “Phantom which was. several lengths behind. “0;.ali” and “Endeavour” soon took tin- lead, and soon after rounding the first buoy, “Endeavour” snapped her iiin-t. On going around tin* buoy at a point near the- bathing sheds ‘ Phanl(*m” capsized, tearing her mailsad uli lc doing on. “Opali” retired alter ran;-, of tin* crew accidently tom-bed “buoy”. “Karoro” and “Q. I. ’ retired earlier in the race, leaving “Popeye” to'he the only boat to complete the- course. Trie starters in the 14-11. class were: Of mb—X. N. .Chat-field. Endeavour—(?. Carruthers. s, Q.T. —Kl. Salt. Karoro—-P. Warren. P peve—H. G. Simpson. Phantom—O. Cedermnn. The race is to be resailed pending the decision of the sailing committee.
