QUARTERLY MEETING The quarterly nicotine; of the Opotiki Fire Heal’d was* held at the beard’s room”on Friday night. The chairman, Mr. F. J. Short, presided. Others present wore; Mr. M. J. Cumjning. Mr’ R. A. Wilson. Mr. J. Shaw' (superintendent), until Mr. O. F. Cave (secretary). Apologies lor absence were received Irom Mr. C. S. Moody and Mr. .J. W. (Jordon. Hot'oro business was dealt with Mr. Short made reference to the death of the late secretary, Mr. C. 11. Fleming, paying a tribute to 1 1 1 h faithful ijp rvico. Superintendent’s Report. The folloiwing report was presented hv the .superintendent (Mr. J. Shatv) for the period April, to September:— I Hiring the jmi'iuil, there have been no requirements in and around the grounds'. The station and yard.' have been kept clean and tidy, 4 suggest that if at all possible Llie yard lie sealed with hot tar. This would assist in killing tin* weeds. .1 he-sump at, the rear of tin l yard requires attention to the rover. At present it m a trap in the dark. 'as one is likely to fall through it at any time. The new gear shed has added a great deal to our eonveuienee,' and is much appreciated. Plant ami! -Clear.—All the plant, and gear is in good working order. Dining the period we have had a little troublo with the batteries on the machine going Hat. We have installed a plug in the reel room and this enables us to charge the batteries without remo\nl. Several of the signal bo-xes have been giving a little trouble, but at present nil are in fair condition. Fire Calls.—. During the period your brigade have answered three calls to liits. all of Which are covered by the usual report. lu addition we luivo answered three false alarms. Two lurv been caused by lightning and ono by telegraph linesmen. ‘ brigade.—The hrigadle is at present nt lull strength. The- co-operation of tin. members and the general efficiency Inures m> room for comment. During tI K . period there lias I teen 25 musters, and 7 meetings, in addition to the Jire calls. The average attendavice is 12 members. General. ---The new Imse has arrived in good conditions. Several fire plugs liavv again been found needing attention. | would suggest that if possible, the post office circuit he wired to en_ j,hln the siren to lie cut off after blowing. This would enable the siren to 1.0 tested regularly. At present it is tliifiii-tilt lor innn to l>o at the station to switch it off on Satin days. Tho now half cries for the alarm circuit, which were recommended by Supcrint.euch nt Wilson, have arrived and we |ir,pc to have them installed in a lew days.
