At the monthly meeting of the County Council „ to-day - tenders were received as follows for the •contract on Keen’s road, for which the council receives a grant of £l for £l : Gosling and Lendrum £llO, Ruff ancl Sons £9O. The'lowest- tender was accepted. Centennial Memorial. Included in the proposals for memorials recommended by- the Provincial .Centennial Councils and approved by the National Centennial Council at its mooting on 12th. September, is one t 0 be erected! at Te Kalia. The memorial is to Ik* a meeting-house, the estimated cOjSt- of which is £3,420.
Tip Top Vice Versa Dance. Enquiries have been made by several people' as to the meaning of a “vice versa” dance, which is to be held by the Tip* Top Chib at Woodlands. Gentlemen are to be dressed as ladies and! ladies will-be dressed as gentlemen. It is expected that the dance will be a great success a.s prizes unto be presented for the best impersonation of lady and gentleman.
Opotiki-Cisborne Road Slip. •> As a result of a . big slip coining down over the Opotiki-Gisborne main highway near the To AVera turn-off traffic on the road was blocked until late this morning. The mail .service was completely disorganised and the night mail from, Gisborne for Opotiki and other northern districts dli'cl not arrive in Opotiki until this afternoon. A motor lorry driven by Mr. lleg. Rob, which attempted to cross the slip went over the bank. The hold-up was the longest experienced on the road for some time. The road at the point had previously given trouble. A Seddon Story. The- current issue of the New Zealand Qentennial " News contains a story concerning the late Richard Seddon, Years alter Mr. Seddon had become a famous parliamentarian, he returned to the West (.toast and renewed acquaintances with a number of mates of his mining-days. Legend! has it that R.J. was asked to go and inspect a memorial erected to himself on a steep hillside.
