OPOTIKI COUNTY COUNCIL
ENGINEER’S , REPORT The county engineei l , Mr. W. W. Upton, reported as follows -at the monthly meeting of the Opotiki (bounty Council, held to-clay :—- •Road Line, OJiiwa.—The necessary : consents have been obtained from Mrs. Matey and Mrs. Humfrey to allow the road' through their properties. Satisfactory arrangements have been made with Mr. Reeve as regards the locality of the road. Quotations are being obtained from surveyors for the land transfer survey. Access to Millar’s/Dinsdalc’s Road. —-In company with Cr. Burke an inspection was mndie of this road. ( The portion of road concerned is the far end of Dinsdaje’s road, >a length of about 22 chains, good access is provided t 0 the last section of land in this country, the road lino then ending at the county boundary and touching Air. Afillar’s property, which is in the Whakatane County. Air. Millar has a Crown lease of Section I Bilock VIII in this county and the access is from the road leading to Matalii. On the road]' in question. Air. Millar has erected a small bridge about 1(5 feet in length, and put in some large culvert pipes, as well as doing some earthwork.
Any assistance the council could do in the way of further formation would no doubt be beneficial. River Erosion (Hcnuessy’s).—Councillor Maxwell and I inspected the locality where the river was cutting away the land on the grass flat (late Grieve and Pile’s property). The erosion taking place is not endangering the road at any place, being over 20 chains ajwny. Tree in Otara River. —I have inspected the above, which i.s a large poplar and has fallen from the roadside into the river, and likely to cause damage to the road alongside. Portions of the tree should be removed, and the river bank where the tree was uprooted from, protected by laying willows, etc. Erosion Tutavtoko River.—ln company with the chairman I inspected the above. I consider it would be cheaper to reform the road if washed away, rather than protect it. Torero River Road (AVainui Road) In compilin’ with the chairman and O. Hedley, an inspection of this road wan made. In my opinion the road lias been badly formed, badly metalled, and requires more culverts, some of the existing culverts are of very poor construction. This road appears to take the place of tin* line running close to the river and was put in by the Native Department. It appears to me that the road line has not been surveyed, and was laid off as a roadi oU links wide.
It appears to me that if the Native Department would construct the road properly and would legalise it, the Council could accept- dedication. •Should this bo done every facility should be made by the Native Department to enable the council to collect rates.
Cion tract Accepted.—Mr. A. . Turner's tender for work on Dickinson’s road has been approved by the district- engineer. Work Carried Out.—Metalling repairs have been done on the following roads j Access to Jackson s, MeGivern’s. Waiawa, IVhitikau, Kutaiere Landing, Paernta, OliLwa, Crooked, and IVaiotahi.
Grader and planer have worked on the Waiawa. Woodlands, Crooked, and Waiotahi.
Tim pieces to he gravelled u-n Dickenson’s Road have been formed with the grader.
'l’he large Inline pipes lor the R-ua-tuna embankment have been ordered and .should! he here this week lduly to start work.
Tender.—Specifications have been
approved and authority received lor work proposed to he done on Keen s Road and tenders have been invited to lie dealt with to-day for the work, viz.. Contract No. (304. for gravelling j:} chains 80 links of road.
