monthly meeting PLUNKET AND REST ROOM The monthly meeting of the OpotikiJ3orough Conneil was held last night. Present-: C'rs. F. J. Short, T. G. Johnson, S. W. Webb, A. G. Stevenson, C. D. Brown and Mr. AY. Hi. Briggs (town clerk). An apology for absence was received- from the Mayor (Mr. CS. S. Moody) and the deput\>mayor (Mr. Short) took the chair. The minutes of the previous monthly meeting and of a special meeting were read and confirmed. Accounts as follows were -passed for payment:—District Fund Account, £845 2s lid; Wharf Account, £9S 10s 6dl; Domain Board Account, £3 3s 3d. Bank balances were shown as follows:—District Fund (dr.) £BBS 18s lOd; Wharf (cr.), £IOO 7s 8d; Domain Board (cr.) £l4 is. Outward correspondence was read and approved. Inward correspondence included the following:— River Erosion.—The Minister of Public Works, Hon. R. Semple, wrote explaining that owing to the prevailing circumstances there had been xuiavoidable delay in commencing the work of protecting the hank of tho Otara river from erosion.—The council decided to reply pointing out the urgency of the work and pointing out that the river had now cut back to the stop-bank, which was now endangered. Sanitary .Contract. —The sanitary contractor wrote stating that the contract would expire at the end of November and offering to carry on the same price subject to prevailing conditions/—The council decided to write to Mr. Harrison accepting the offer, and to compliment him on the manner in which lie had carried out his work, which had been entirely satisfactory. General Business The foreman’s report was presented and approved. Stock on Streets. —Questions concerning stock found on the streets were discussed at length. Health. —Mr. Wallwork. health inspector, reported that one diphtheria and two cases of erysipelas had been investigated. Water Main on Hill.—The deputymayor referred to the water main on He spit aj( Hill, which lie said was exposed in -several places.—After discussion the council decided to secure a report from tho foreman.
Vehicle Crossings.—The questions of vehicle crossings in King Street wajs discussed at seme length and it was decided to make an alteration to! the ere >sing at the entrance to the Opotiki On h.
Notice of Motion.—-The deputy-mayor gave notice of liis intention to move at the next meeting of the council, that tie- motion dealing with the appointment of the whole council as a general purposes committee be -rescinded! all d that the council revert to various coin-
in it tees as previously. Dogs on Streets. —The nuisance created by dogs in the business area was discussed and it was finally agreed that only dogs on the leash he allowed in the business area from Richard Street to Kelly Street and between these two streets from St. John Street to Potts Avenue,
i’luuket and Pest Pooms. —Cr. Stove'll, m reported that the Centennial ( elebrations Cenimittoe hadi decided to postpone the raising of money for the I’lunkef and Rest Poms as it was felt that residents would not support- such an appeal while funds were being collected for patriotic purposes, ft now appeared they would have to come back to the council to raise the money for the loan. He felt they should get mi with the job. He believed that the various women’s organisations would help to raise money for the upkeep of t-he rooms. Clr. Leave of Absence. —fn view of the continued indisposition of Or. I*. M. Bridger, the council decided to grant t;ie necessary leave of absence.
Hedges.—Cr. Stevenson referred to the danger of a high hedge at a street intersection which was proving a dangr. .to traffic. On the motion of Cr. Johnson it was decided to request the t v ucr to cut the hedge to a reasonable ie.'el. Foreman's Report The borough foreman, iVIr. J- >Sarjeaut. reported as follows tor the peri-
File plugs cleaned, and two leaky ones repaired. Oam scoured and intake cleaned. lslow-oi.i. repaired on water main. Several stop-cocks repaired. All meters icad in borough and several repaired. Services repaired Hospital Mill. Both tracks to bathing sheds on Volkner Island filled etc. Cap rail fixed at new cemetery. Approach to new landing lit wharf timbered at hack and idling built up again. Wlmrf slip repaired. New concrete fire box built at jaid and new tar tank erected. Fence at Thompson's plantation repaiied. 1 would suggest new, totarn posts here as the gum posts are rotten in the ground and continually bYcnkiiig off. Traffic and pedestiian lines are being painted. I'ootnaths patched and glass cut. Some paths have been sprayed with sodium. IToinix made at yard. Approximately 100 yards of liver metal carted to dlump at yard and roads patched. Roads and intersections formed from time to time. Highway.—Church mul Bridge Street built "P. watered and rolled. Intel section of Bridge and Nelson Streets, also one .chain towards Brabant Street excavated and spoil used for building up sides. This portion is now being filled up with foundation reck. Ometerv, lawns, etc., kept mowed.
