Public Holiday. .Labour Day. whiteli falls* on Monday, will be observed as a public holiday. The ‘ ‘News’' will net be published oil that day. Athletic Sports. The Opotiki Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club will open the season on Monday. October 3D; Programmes will be available to-morrow. Public Holiday; Labour Day, which falls on Monday next, will be observed as a public holiday. The Opotiki News will not be published on that day. Sports Fixtures for Week-end. On Monday (Labour Day)), the Opotiki Bowling Club and the Citizens’ Croquet Clubs will officially open their season. The Opotiki Yacht Club will also open the season with a handicap race on the same day. Crickst Games. A series of cricket games Avill he played at the reserve on Sunday, 22nd. inst. All players and intending players are requested to attend in order that the formation of the various clubs can be finalised before Sunday, October 29, when competition matches will commence. Shipping. The m . v . Motu arrived at Opotiki to-day and will sail for Auckland at noon to-morrow. Next week the m.v. Waiotalii will leave Auckland for Opotiki on Tuesday night. Monday being Labour Day. Horticultural Society. A Stewart crystal water set will lie presented) by Mr. Geo. Lisk to the winner of the monthly points for the year at the display and lecture evenings of the Opotiki and District Horticultural Society. Tractor Demonstrations. Attention is drawn to the announcement in Horne’s Garage advertisement that tractor demonstrations may ho arranged iir any part of the district. A Bay of Plenty representative will be in Opotiki on Tuesday and Thursday next. Magpies in Opotiki: Magpies have spread rather rapidly in the North Island during the last few years. An Opotiki resident heard the call of the magpie some time ago and has located two of the birds near the Otara bridge. It would be interesting toi know if the birds have been observed in other parts of the district. Cows on Streets. - The borough inspector, Mr. J. H. Morell is at present an inmate of the Opotiki hospital, having recently undergone an operation. Apparently with the intention of taking advantage c-f the absence of Mr, Morell, it is reported that some borough residents have been putting cows on the streets both by day and night. It is not the intention of the council to impound these animals, but unless the practice ceases immediately, evidence of illegal grazing will be taken and prosecutions will follow. Giant Wistaria. What may he termed a perfumed paradise is the only description of the magnificent wistaria bower of Mr. r I. Palmer, Te Puke, now approaching its full bloom. The vine is reputed to be one of the largest, if not the largest, in the Southern Hemisphere. Springing from the one gnarled and twisted trunk, tin 1 bower spreads over an area of 3(H) square yards, and is .suspended on a series of arches.

P.O. Holiday Notice. On Labour Da.vi, 23 rd. October, t-lio Post aiul Telegraph Office* will bo closed in all branches except the Telephone exchange which will observe the usual ■ .continuous attendance. Mails for offices north of Tancatua and south of Matawai will he despatched and will close at 5 a.in. The air mail service has been suspended in the meantime on account ol the acquisition of Union Airways’ planes for war purposes. The suspension does net apply to skeleton / services still being run bv Lockheed machines.

Temperatures. North Island temperatures at 9 o> clock yesterday .morning were as follows: —'Napier and Capo Pa Riser 59. Wellington SS, Auckland and Opotiki 55. Gisborne 51. Cannot import Grader. Import restrictions were fully‘discussed at a meeting of the Maiiriccvillc County. Council, when the council was informed! that the reason for the non-delivery., of the new power’ grader was because no license to import could lie olitaiued. The county cleric was instructed to communicate with the Department of Industry and Commerce, and it is hoped that strong representations will end in the necessary license being granted.
