The Director-General, Post anu Telegraph Department, has issued the folio wing statement:— -- 1 As part of .a general scheme for im- A *’’ #< y. proving the telephone toll network in the Thames and Bay of Plenty districts, a new direct telephone circuit has been provided between Auckland and! Thames and two new circuits between Auckland and Tauranga states -the Postmaster-General (the Hen. F. Jones). All circuits uie of the “carrier” type which is so highly suitable for long-distance communication. v * The provision of the direct AueklandTliames circuit will not only facilitate the transmission of toll traffic between these places, but will appreciably relieve the load on other lines, as hitherto all Auckland-Thames traffic has had to be switched at Paoroa, which was and still is the switching point for a number of other important stations. The new carrier equipment installed for working between Auckland and Tauranga is of the 3-channel!typo, but in the course of a few days one channel will lie extended to provide a direct toll circuit lietwe'en Auckland and Whakatane. In addition, a;direct circuit is being provided between Tauranga and Hamilton. - The combined effect of these new circuit. arrangements, together with d carrier circuit between Tauranga and Gisborne which js expected to beeoin,) a, available within a few weeks, will be to provide a much improved leng-dis- - lance toll service between the Auckland', Waikato, Thames, Bay of Pleil- - _■ ty and Gisborne district.*!
