WA9OTAHI MEETING The monthly -.meeting of» the Waiotalii Women's Institute was held on October lltli., Mrs. W. Payne presiding. The meeting opened .with the 'reading of /the aspirations, and Airs. L. V. Looney gave a full report of the bi-annual Federation meeting. The Golden Thread, “Personalities of the Day,” was on Alr.s. Neville Chamberlain, and wa.s given by Mrs. Looney. The programme was arranged by the Garden Circle, and there was a fine display of spring flowers and vegetables for the competitions, and also plants on the sales table. A reading from A. A. Alilno oil ‘Daffodils’ and a competition' ‘Guessing leaves by, scent’ were amusing. Airs.'. J. AI. Scott gave an instructive talk on “Poisonous Plants in tlie Garden. 5 Twenty-throe varieties of leaves mounted and numbered) lor identifying purposes provided another interesting competition. Competitions resulted : Bowl of spring flowers. Airs. L. V. Looney 1, Airs. AY. Looney 2. Best bloom. Airs. P. Looney (tulip) 1, Airs. AA’. Looney (protea) 2. Best vegetable. Airs. P. Looney and .Alls. AVliito equal (lettuce aiul leek). Afternoon tea was served by Alestlarties Reeve. Looney and AYyllie and Aliss Ik Du Pontet, and the singing, of the .National Anthem brought the meeting to a close. V/ AIM AN A-NUKUHOU MEETING (News Correspondent!) The October meeting of the AA’aima-na-Nukuhou AA'cmeu’s Institute was held in the AA’aimana Hall, and was very well attended. Airs. Alarm presi doth and the singing of the “Ode to Friendship” opened the meeting. The minutes and correspondence were dealt with. A letter was read from the Dominion' Fxecutive. asking what accommodation etc., could be made available in an emergency; il at any time the capital cities of 'Ne w Zealand bad to be evacuated. The response from mein hers was very good, all being only too willing to help in any way they could. __ - Alls. AA'oollield asked all members to plant potatoes this season lor the potato competition. The time ol digging has been extended to, A larch or April. -All present contributed 1 - each towards the Leper Fund, and a cheque will be sent to Christchurch. An invitation to the Tancatua Institute birthday on November 14 was received. it was decided to add a collection of vegetables to the December competitions, and the vegetables to be sold for an emergency comfort fund. The “Golden Thread” was given by Airs.* Davies. The Roll Call was “1 Minutes Impromptu Speeches”, which caused much laughter. A word-building competition was won. by Airs. Hewitt. Tin* day’s competitions were well entered for. Results are as follows; — Cream Puffs: Airs. F. Bell 1, Airs. AA’oollield 2. Airs. Burnett 3. Lemon Honey: Airs. Stevenson 1, Airs. I. Savage 2. Airs. T. AA'ardlaw 3. Best B1oo.ni: Airs. A. Eagle 1. '.scarlet sparaxia). Airs. King Airs. Stevenson 3. The* hostesses served a dainty tea, and a hear tv vote of thanks to the judges, Mrs. Bell and Airs. Gallagher, andl the singing ot the National Anthem. closed the mooting.
