MADE BANKRUPT AT So; , STEP AT OWN REQUEST BELFAST, Aug. 3.—The affairs of Mrs. Charlotte Jjospardl. .of Whitehead, County Antrim, famous suffragette leader and sister of the first Earl of lYpres, were mentioned in the court in Belfast. Mr. Nicholson, appearing for her, said she waß 96 years old. She had been adjudicated bankrupt at her own request, and offei-ed 10s in tho pound, which the official assignee would not accept. Her income last year was £1199 13s id. It had been much larger. Mr. Warnoek, for some of the creditors and an official assignee." said Mrs. Despa id gave power of attorney last September to John Mulvenna, her secretary and chauffeur, and she" had run into debt -to the extent of £IOOO in 18 months. ' The Lord Chief Justice appointed an independent, creditors’ assignee and adjourned-the matter for three weeks. Mrs. Despard marched; with Mrs. Pankhurst in the 19C3 “raid” on the House of Commons, and the campaign she went to prison. When she was 82 she joined in a women’s march to Hyde Park to demand an equal franchise for men and women.
