JAPANESE REVIEW -;•! i ■■pi* . ■ " I- ' ” I WEAK El? THAN IN 191 4 A review <J the international .situation was given by Admiral Nakamura of Japan, formerly a. member of the Japanese Cabinet. in a broadcast address. He compared Germany’s position in 1914 with the outlook today. and pointed out that her position in a nuiuber of directions was weaker than was the case 2b years, ago. Herr Hitler had made the mistake of under-rating British and French naval power. He was a landman not a seaman, and did not appreciate the importance of naval superiority in modern warfare. It was true that Germany’s strength in submarines was greater than in 1914. but the striking power of the submarine had been countered to a large extent by greater facilities, including aviation, for detecting the whereabouts of submarine raiders and attacking them. It. was also toi be recognised, said Admiral Nakumara, that there were to-day avenues of supplies' open to Germany that did not exist in 1914, but- the value of these, has yet to he assessed. Moreover, the power and;extent of the blockade Britain . and France were able to impose upon Germany had yet to he hilly demonstrated.
