Supplement to the m.B, 1939. SPECIAL MEETING RALLYOF MEN The War With Germany. Opotiki Local Responsibility. To Protect Home and Business Interests of Our Own Volunteers. In order to crystallise a desire which we all share to take our full part as citizens of New Zealand in the support of the forces now arrayed in war against Nazi aggression, we, the undersigned, invite the men of Opotiki town and district to attend a special meeting in the PARISH HALL on WEDNESDA Y, September 20th. AT 7.45 P.M. There are in our area a large number of men between the ages of 21 and •;!5 w ho have already been called to volunteer for war service at home and abroad. If the war proves to be a long war—and this is evidently the opinion of the British Cabinet—we can be sure that as tune goes on this district will supply a considerable quota. Therefore it would appear to be oui duty from the beginning to make some local organisation which has as its special objective the care of the interests of every man .who volunteers, or is called up, and is accepted lor service. M'vost of us will have to carry on our jobs at home and it will be our duty and privilege to> make such provision as may, as far as possible, give each individual man going from our district an assurance that we who remain are united to guard his interests while he is away, and to help make ready for his re-establishment upon his return. It is hoped that an organisation with appropriate sub-committees may be set up to specially care for the concerns of all who may leave this district for war from first to last. We wish to hearten the volunteers as they go cut with the knowledge that they can communicate at any time with an organisation in their own district which is established in recognition of the saciilico they have made. In order that the meeting may get some proper idea of the extent and obligation of the Opotiki area we have invited Captain C. D. Brown of the local Territorial unit and Mr. It'. J. Baigent, President of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, to give such information as to the present and prospective, position as is practicable. Mr. J. B. Cow has consented toi preside. Our wish is that Opotiki should without delay take necessary steps to co-operatc, with the Government (upon which the first and major responsibility rests), and with world-wide institutions for the provision of comforts and for the relief of war distress, by undertaking, A SPECIAL VOLUNTARY OVERSIGHT FOR THE MEN (AND WOMEN) WHO ENLIST FROM OUR OWN DISTRICT. W. A. GAULT, County Chairman. G. S. MOODY, Mayor and President Opotiki Red Cross. E. J. BAIGENT, President Returned Soldiers’ Assn. S. MAX WEILL, Chairman Hospital Board. E. THOMPSON, President Farmers’ Union.
