BIRTHDAY PARTY Tito Opotiki brunch cf the AV.D.F. *' 1. celebrated its ninth birthday at a ticcial even i ml: held recently. 1 lie hn:l was beautifully decorated with spring Hewers, Kepresent.itives ol the Farmers' Union and Women’s Institutes were also present. Ah. A. E. Martin carried out the duties ol AI.C., while -Mr. J. Mannix supplied the music. Monte carlu.s "'ere won by .Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Mill, and Aliss .Julian and Air. t . Unveil. Apa pet hat (competition lor men caused much hilarity and was won by -Mr. C. Powell. Another competition which aroused considerable interest was the findin- of'"Mr. and -Mrs. Doodlembuck.” The mysterious personages* proved to he Alls. Fox si.nd -Mr. I’eg. Walkei. The winners were Miss Mena Broun ami -Mr. \\ . l.owe junr. A musical parcel competition was won by -Mrs. Pennell. Mi.-s B. Carruthers gave an exhibition of tap dancing, receiving a - well-merited encoie. “Ten .Pretty Girls” who sang ami acted, proved to he very popular with onlookers . The "girls” were, members ol the division. - suitably attired h r the occasion. -Mr. hooper contributed a song and Mrs. ISoughen (a clever comedienne from Australia), enlivened proceedings with soicral humorous items at the piano. In ms were also contributed liy Airs. Mulluix on the guitar. these being wMI received. A home-made supper was served inImrnallv by the ladies’ committee. Bride of place on a table was taken by Ih, birthday cake,, which was surmounted by nine, candles and had the ■division's eo'lours (red, white, blue, gnen and yellow) in the form of ribbons, ,1 cross the cake. The cake had be n made bv Airs. .Lowe andl iced by AJr. Guthrie, both ol whom received si • isil thanks. On the conclusion of the supper. Airs. Martin called on Mr. -Martin to cut the cake. -Mr. Mai till e',ve a brief speech and congratulated - the division on attaining another bil tilday. After supper dancing was continued for soiiH' time. \t tin* beginning ol the evening, Airs. .Martin welcomed the guests and (I; • gathering stood and sang the Nath -ml Anthem. Proceedings were concluded, by the singing of Aitld' Syne.
